A Staff Psychologists may be assigned to any VHA program and setting, including inpatient
or outpatient medicine, surgery, mental health, neurology,
rehabilitation medicine, geriatrics, Vet Centers, and the VHA National
Center for Organizational Development. Staff Psychologists diagnose
mental disorders, conduct psychological and/or neuropsychological
assessments, treat mental disorders through a variety of modalities and
provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders.
Among the modalities provided are individual, family, and group
psychotherapies, and other interventions such as biofeedback,
psychological hypnosis, and environmental interventions. They consult
with medical center staff on a wide variety of patient care issues.

The staff psychologist holds a state license to practice psychology
and has at least two years
postdoctoral work experience as a psychologist in the VHA or a
comparable professional setting. The psychologist applies advanced
professional psychological diagnostic methods and evidence-based
intervention strategies to a full range of patient problems in his/her
work setting. S/he has advanced knowledge of psychological diagnosis,
intervention, and behavioral health that qualifies him/her to provide
advice and consultation to professionals representing a variety of
disciplines. The primary job functions of psychologists at this level
include the provision of direct psychological patient care, consultation
services on difficult or complex cases, and education of staff.
The incumbent will be assigned to Mental Health Service at the Stephens City, Virginia Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) and will
be responsible for Home Based Primary Care (HBPC). In this environment, the incumbent will be a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team with
responsibility for assessment, therapeutic intervention, case management
training, education and administration. The incumbent must be willing to travel throughout the catchment area to provide patient care and can expect to be away from the CBOC in excess of 50% of the duty day. However, the incumbent may be
assigned additional responsibilities in other locations as directed by
the Psychology Executive.
The position requires knowledge of psychological tests, interview
strategies, behavioral observation, and other assessment tools as
appropriate to derive sound assessment and case conceptualization as
well as diagnostic impressions. Use of motivational interviewing is

Although the incumbent may oversee other professionals in a
consulting capacity, he or she functions primarily as a member of the
treatment team which collectively contribute to the therapeutic gains of
the patient. The incumbent is expected to promotes a psychotherapeutic
atmosphere among the professional staff.
Work Schedule: M-F 8am-4:30pm but may be modified for patient care needs. Extensive travel will be required.
