This position
is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. 
The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.  The Internship provides manager's a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements.  It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion.  For more information on Internship opportunities within the Department of Veterans Affairs, please visit http://MyCareeratVA.va.gov/CareerPath/Internships

The Pathway's Internship Program are for degree seeking students taking a least half-time academic,who have not yet completed their degree and  enrolled in a technical, vocational 2,4, year college, university, graduate or professional school.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Subject to a background/suitability investigation.
  • Designated and/or random drug testing may be required.
  • Be at least 16 years old (by closing date of this vacancy announcement).
  • Accepted for/Currently enrolled in a qualified educational institution.
  • Must be at least a half-time student and hold a 2.0 average.

 This position is assigned to work in the Fiscal Service at the Northport VA Medical Center as a Student Trainee. The work schedule will be flexible around your school schedule and can be anywhere from part-time or full-time.

The student trainee will report to the Chief, of the Fiscal Service. The student trainee will perform a variety of clerical, administrative  and technical duties/responsibilities in support of Fiscal Service.  This  is a developmental position that involves work in a mix of functional areas which involve both operations and systems activity.  The student will work assignments in the various sections in the Fiscal Service such as : Accounting, Payroll, and Budget.

The Student Trainee will assist in the following duties below:

  • Assists Fiscal staff in arranging and maintaining both tape and disk storage media. This includes inventory, labeling and preparing for use.

 

  • Assists Fiscal Personnel in collecting, arranging and documenting computer programs and manuals.

 

  • Provide assistance to Fiscal Personnel in minor trouble-shooting on peripheral equipment, use of both DHCP and PC systems, obtaining computer supplies and following computer systems procedures and security guidelines.

 

  •  Performs tasks of a routine clerical nature, when appropriate, in support of computer operation.

 

  • Review open accounts payable documents and send follow-up email to department about obtaining an invoice or invoice certification.

 

  • Do a cost workup for a traveler in the Fed Traveler systems on the web. Use government per diem rates to calculate maximum amount authorized to travel.

 

  • Stamp invoices paid based on FMS processing date and file in the Accounting section files.

 

 

 

Work Schedule: Full time or Part time; Monday- Friday  Shift 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Internship Program:  To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis.

 

Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program. To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

 

  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program

  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements

  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement, and perform their job sucessfully

Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.

In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.

Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours

 Qualification Requirement

For GS-4 Education: Completion of 2 academic year of post-high school study or associate's degree

OR

GS-4 Experience: Completion  of 1 academic year of study and two period of student trainee work experience

OR

Completion of 1 and 1/2 academic years of study and one period of student trainee work experience

One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

 

Suggested majors include: Business Admin, Accounting  or Finance
