NEH is an independent grant-making agency of the government dedicated to supporting research, education, preservation, and public programs in the humanities.
Office of General Counsel (OGC) provides legal advice and assistance to the NEH Chairman, NEH staff, and
the National Council on the Humanities. The OGC ensures that NEHs activities
comply with a broad range of Federal laws, including Federal grants law,
appropriations law, employment law, civil rights law, ethics law, and
administrative law. The Office is also responsible for drafting legislation,
analyzing pending bills, and managing the agencys Freedom of Information Act
(FOIA) program. The
incumbent is responsible for providing administrative and legal assistance to
the OGC on his/her own initiative and on the basis of brief oral or written
instructions. This includes researching
legal issues, drafting legal documents, assisting OGC with meeting various Federal
reporting requirements, and providing a range of other administrative and legal
support to OGC staff.

OGC attorneys with assistance with meeting various statutory responsibilities,
including Ethics, FOIA, FACA, and Section 106, by drafting correspondence,
agreements, opinions, and memos; by coordinating information and filing reports

handling a wide variety of Council-related matters.
