WORK SCHEDULE:  MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY - 8:00AM TO 4:30PM

NOTE: This appointment is in the Excepted Service under Title 38 authority for research positions. This appointment is non-status, non-permanent and does not confer eligibility to be noncompetitively converted to a career-conditional or career appointment. The duration of the appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 13 months; however, it may be reduced/or extended depending upon research project funding.

This is a Research Health Science Specialist position with the VA Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) working with the VA Palo Alto Network of Dedicated Enrollment Sites (NODES). The position is at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System (VAPAHCS) and the duty station is located at the Palo Alto Division, with some travel to the other divisions and community based outpatient clinics. The Research Health Science Specialist (RHSS) administratively reports to the VA Palo Alto CSP Director of the Network of Dedicated Enrollment Sites (NODES) and the local site investigator for the study. The incumbent will serve as a liaison between the CSP research study and the medical center staff. Under the direction of the Site Investigator, this person will be responsible for the day to day management of the study operations, including the recruitment, screening, enrollment and follow-up of subject; and communication with the data coordinator center for the study, the study Co-Chair's offices, and the research pharmacy. The local study coordinator and site investigator will have responsibility for coordinating the treatment interventions and follow-up procedures at the participating medical center, and ensuring compliance with the study protocol. The RHSS will work as part of an interdisciplinary research team studying psychiatric, physiological, and genetic variables.

Major duties and responsibilities include:
• Developing policies, procedures and criteria for administration of a major clinical research program.
• Administering evaluation review for approved projects.
• Screening and evaluating candidates for clinical studies.
• Managing implementation, control and reporting on clinical tests.
• Performing work in establishing the policies and procedures by which the research program will be judged.
• Monitoring compliance with program requirements

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT)

Demonstrated experience working in a psychiatric, physiological, and genetic clinical research setting. IF SO, MUST SUBSTANTIATE IN FEDERAL RESUME.

 

BASIC REQUIREMENT

Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study or specific course requirements related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. In addition to meeting the basic education requirement noted above, this position requires:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is progressively responsible experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and is in or related to the work of the position.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION

Successful completion of a  Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree, in a major field of study related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.
