Tour of Duty: Day Shift

 

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Nurse Practitioner assesses, plans, implements, collaborates and evaluates the needs and care of patients with acute and chronic diseases. The Nurse Practitioner promotes self-care, and collaborates with patients to establish realistic health goals.  In addition to providing direct patient care the Nurse Practitioner also provides patient and family teaching, staff education, and consults and collaborates with other health care providers; participates in nursing and medical research; prescribes medications and adjunctive modalities; and refers patients.  The Nurse Practitioner serves as an expert practitioner, executing position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to management of complex patient care.  The Nurse Practitioner demonstrates leadership in delivering holistic care through collaborative strategies including working closely with the Medicine and Surgery staff and Outpatient Service staff and family members of patients.  As Nurse Practitioner in Surgery Service, in collaboration with the Surgery staff, is primarily responsible for timely evaluation and management of patients specific to the Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery Sections, and who are located in the SICU/PCU and the Cardiothoracic step-down unit. The Nurse Practitioner adheres to the requirements of the Michigan Nurse Practice Acts or Ohio Nurse Practice Acts, in addition to Medical Center and Surgery Service standards and Medical Staff By-Laws. The incumbent will provide coverage for the Cardiothoracic Physician Assistant when they are unavailable due to OR coverage, illness or vacation.

 

Physical Requirements: This position requires Heavy Lifting, 45 pounds heavy carrying, 45 pounds straight pulling (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); use of fingers; both hands required; walking & standing 8-12 hours; repeated bending 8 hours; both legs required; ability for rapid mental & muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable @ 13” to 16” to Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; depth perception; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aide permitted). Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

 

Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

· U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

· Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.

· Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

· The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6).

· Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

· Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:

Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:

· Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;

· Professional Development: performance, education/career development;

· Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;

· Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

The Nurse Practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master’s degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]
