NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERSHIP IS REQUIRED: This is an excepted position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the California National Guard. tHIS IS AN INDEFINITE POSITION 

Selectee may be non-competitively converted to permanent status if/when funding becomes unencumbered

This position is located in the Safety Office at ANG Aviation Wings.  The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support in planning, organizing and administering a unit occupational safety and health program by serving as manager over ground, explosive and nuclear surety.  Incumbent advises command, staff, and operating officials of safety and occupational health requirements, standards and procedures.

Minimum Requirements: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

Experience in scientific or technical work that provided an understanding of the basic principles and concepts of the safety and occupational health field. Creditable general experience must have demonstrated the achievement of knowledge equivalent to the education described above.

COPIES OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED FOR EDUCATION TO BE CREDITABLE

 

Safety And Occupational Health Manager, GS-0018-11: Must have at least 36 months experience, education or training in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The following knowledge's, skills, and abilities will be used by the selecting officials to determine the best qualified applicants from which selection will be made: 

1. Knowledge of safety occupational health laws, principles, standards, and inspection methods required to identify unsafe acts and working conditions.

2. Knowledge of safety and occupational laws, and inspection and survey techniques sufficient to identify hazardous work practices and to recommend corrective measures.

3. Skill in analyzing mishap data to determine trends including type of mishaps and equipment involved, and frequency and severity of mishaps to Government personnel and property.

4. Ability to prepare reports.


SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Successful completion of all requirements for a master’s or an equivalent degree, or two full academic years of graduate education, which is safety and occupational health management or safety engineering, industrial engineering or directly related fields such as Industrial Hygiene, Fire Prevention Engineering or Industrial Psychology.   To be creditable, applicants must submit transcripts, diplomas or other forms of completion certificates to provide verification of courses.

**Course work in fields closely related to those specified may be accepted if it clearly provides applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance.**

Conditions of Employment:

9. Develops and provides technical safety training/instruction to supervisors, employees, and/or unit safety representatives on a wide range of work operations areas, such as traffic safety techniques, proper storage of hazardous materials, common laboratory hazards, confined space, lockout/tag out and building evacuation procedures.
