The incumbent serves as a Registered Nurse providing leadership in the application of Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) to nursing practice and to healthcare overall at the Washington DC VA Medical Center.  The incumbent will direct, coordinate, monitor and provide status reports related to BCMA.  The incumbent will comprehensively test, verify and update BCMA versions prior to activation, making recommendations for procedural changes as appropriate.  Evaluates, analyzes and applies prompt solutions to problems in software and hardware using proper troubleshooting techniques.  Maintains security and privacy in the provision and periodic view of staff computer menus and security keys.  Plans, teaches and conducts effective training activities. Collaborates with Nursing Service in the development and maintenance of nursing documentation (CPRS) templates and reports.  Utilizes Microsoft Office software in the preparation of memorandums, requests, reports and educational materials.  Serves as a liaison between the National BCMA Program Office, facility-level management, administration, clinical staff, Information Resources Management, Pharmacy BCMA leadership and Informatics regarding BCMA. Leads implementation efforts on any Bar Code Expansion efforts at the facility.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position.  A physical examination prior to employment may be required. 
  • Registration – Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows:

         (1)  Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR

         (2)  The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR

         (3)  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

The following requirements are preferred for this position:

  • At a minimum, applicants should possess 3 years experience as an RN that is determined to be sustained and consistently at or above an acceptable level of quality.  
  •  Knowledge in the application of clinical software to nursing practice.
  •  Experience in Nursing Informatics or with systems implementation. 
  •  Demonstrated outcomes in working with interdisciplinary teams on clinical and administrative projects.
