As a Computer Scientist in the Bioinformatics and Biostatistics Division (BBD), within the Office of the Center Director (OCD), Office of Research (OR), National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR), you will apply computational science techniques to design and develop bioinformatics and health informatics software to resolve scientific computing problems.

  • Designs and develops bioinformatics and health informatics software.
  • Participates in establishing system design characteristics to meet requirements of researchers and regulators.
  • Participates with teams of engineers and scientists in completing phases of larger projects by developing subsystems or components.
  • Provides technical guidance and application software support for scientific computing in areas such as database design.
  • Investigates software architectures and development of methods to improve software reusability and portability.

You must meet the Basic Requirement AND the Minimum Qualifications specified below:

Basic RequirementPossess a Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.

Minimum Qualifications:

GS-11: Possess at least one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal Service, conducting database development, data analysis, modeling and simulation, and data display; assisting in the evaluation, design, and development of algorithms and software for scientific computing; providing application software support; and, testing and optimizing the functionality of systems, networks, and data; OR possess a Ph.D., LL.M., or equivalent doctoral degree OR have successfully completed 3 full years (54 semester hours or the equivalent) of progressively higher level post-graduate education leading to such a degree with major study in a field that equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position; OR possess a combination of the specified specialized experience and the graduate education as described above that, when combined, equal 100% of the total requirement. (Please note that only graduate education in excess of the first 36 semester hours may be used in this calculation.)

All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.
