Position is located at the National Archives Northeast Philadelphia facility located at 14700 Townsend Road, Philadelphia, PA 19154-1096

As a Student Intern, you will perform work on archival records, which may include reference service, arrangement, processing, description, preservation and holdings maintenance, sorting, retrieval, relocation, and re-filing of records.

Student Intern Program:  This position is being filled under the new Pathways – Internship Program which provide opportunities for high school, vocational and technical, undergraduate, graduate, and professional students to be exposed to the work of the Federal government.

 

Student Definition:  Students must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc,) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled) throughout the duration of the appointment, including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842. You must be enrolled for the Fall 2013 session.

 

Position Duration/Expectation:  Positions will be temporary not-to-exceed 1 year.  May be extended in 1 year increments based on continued need/funds for the position and the student's continued compliance in the Intern Program.

Typical duties may include:

 

·       Providing reference service by searching, re-filing, inter-filing, copying or scanning records in various filing systems and simple extractions.  Work also includes pulling and re-filing records for researchers, registering, monitoring and assisting  researchers in the research room, and serving records to researchers in the research room.  The incumbent may be required  to lift, carry, and move heavy boxes weighing up to 50 pounds each.

·       Assisting with archival project work including, processing, arrangement, preservation and holdings maintenance, and description which may include item and series level descriptions as well as creating enhanced finding aids such as various types of container lists. 

·       Work may involve the handling of documents requiring basic preservation.

Basic Qualifications:  You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled).

 

For GS-5:  One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level that has included such activities as:  performing reference services, arrangements, descriptions, accessioning, or preservation of archival records; utilizing information technology applications, providing technical assistance, guidance, and training others; and preparing reports, forms, and other material.

 

Substitution of Education for Experience:  Education may be substituted for experience.  Four years of education above the high school level or a bachelor’s degree from accredited educational institutions.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Based on the information provided in your application package, qualified students will be assigned a score and placed in one of three categories – Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified.  Those students who are determined to be best qualified will be referred to the hiring manager for further consideration.  Qualified veterans are placed ahead of non-veterans within each category.  Qualified veterans with a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more are placed at the top of the best qualified group.
