MAJOR DUTIES:  This position is located in the Pharmacy Department in Fort Thompson, South Dakota.  The purpose of this position is to assist the Pharmacy Staff by performing the following duties:


·       Requires skill in operation and care of various types of pharmacy equipment, such as counting and labeling machines, typewriters, computer programs, pharmacy balances, laminar airflow hood and other pharmacy equipment such as Dads.

·       Maintains pharmacy store room and clinic drugs stocks; Makes routine tours of area serviced by the pharmacy to ascertain replenishment needs. Needs to be qualified to perform ward inspections that comply with the JCAHO standards.

·       Receives drug shipments: Logs into system all drugs and equipment received, records receipts on cards maintained for that purpose; Notifies the pharmacist of any delayed shipments, partial receipts, or similar events affecting the drug stock.

·       Is responsible for proper storage of drugs in areas assigned, i.e., expiration dates, rotation of drug stocks, etc.  Prepackaged drug form bulk stores into prescription size, maintains control logs as required for quality control and statistical purposes.

·       Type’s prescription labels; calculates doses to match physician's order with pharmacy stocks and adjusts label accordingly; fills prescriptions as directed.  Prepares unit-doses for patients, including injectable drugs; calculates quantities of drugs required to match physician's order with pharmacy stocks; Prepares products for intravenous use; fills the unit-dose medication cart; records necessary information on control logs.

·       Performs other position related duties as assigned.

·         GS-03:  Six (6) months of general experience.

·         GS-04:  One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-03 grade level.

·         GS-05:  One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-04 grade level.


SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of:


·         Pharmaceutical nomenclature;

·         Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals;

·         Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the

·         Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals.




GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.






·         For GS-3:  Successful completion of one (1) year of study that included a course in biology, chemistry, or physics.

·         For GS-4:  Successful completion of two (2) years of study in pharmacy or pharmacy technology that included at least 12 semester hours in courses in the care, storage, distribution, and preparation of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate laboratory work.

·         For GS-5: Successful completion of a full four (4) year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses.  Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience.  Successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the one (1) year of specialized experience required for GS-05.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE DEFINED:  Knowledge of pharmacy computer system; Requires skill in operation and care of various types of pharmacy equipment; Requires good reading skills to compute requested amounts of drugs and supplies to the amounts obtained in the pharmacy and for accurate measuring/weighing of pharmaceuticals; Knowledge of drug storage requirements; Knowledge of record-keeping systems; Knowledge of filling and recording drug orders and receipts.
