JOB SUMMARY:

Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission.  They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations.  The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

About the Position:

This position is located at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Mobile District, Operations Division, BW&T/ AL-Coosa Project.  Work is performed while residing on board the vessel/floating plant, the Motor Vessel Lawson based out of Tuscaloosa, AL.   The vessel travels  navigational waterways maintained by USACE supporting the Corps of Engineers' earliest Civil Works mission- Navigation.   Navigation projects date to the early days of the United States, when rivers and waterways were the primary paths of commerce in the new country.

You will serve as a deckhand aboard floating plant. As a deckhand you will safely following agency regulations. Assist in snagging, jetty and revetment work, pile driving operation, etc. Operate a small skiff, and stabilizer spuds on barge. Perform various duties required in the maintenance and general upkeep of the plant and machinery.Use of various tool to maintain and repair deck equipment.

Screen Out Element: Your resume must reflect experience or training which indicates your ability to work as a Deckhand, without more than normal supervision.

Handle and fasten lines to moor plant and to make tow. Clean, wash, scrub, and chip rust in connection with daily housekeeping and preparatory to painting. Paint deck, superstructure and machinery works as helper in repair of machinery and equipment. Heave lead line. Operates capstans, winches and similar deck equipment. Grease and service deck equipment. Splice cables and lines.You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities)in the following areas:

  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) on dredge and towboat deck
  • Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc.
  • Ability to use dexterity and safety when working aboard floating plant.

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy physical effort is required in assisting in pile driving and performing deckhand duties. Continuously stands, walks, bends, reaches, and climbs. Carries objects such as cables, rope, containers of grease, paint, etc. weighing up to fifty pounds.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: Works over and around water aboard floating plant. Exposed to cuts, bruises, slips, falls, burns, or injury from moving parts of equipment.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
