Join the NIH for an exciting opportunity! We are looking for talented, hard-working interns to perform essential functions in our 27 Institutes and Centers.

 

The NIH Internship Program is for current students who are enrolled in high school, college, professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; or certificate program lasting at least one year. It is intended to promote possible careers in the civil service to students and individuals accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational program.

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • U.S. Citizen, national or legal permanent resident. Non-Citizens may apply;
  • Must be a U.S. citizen prior to conversion to a competitive appointment;
  • Enrolled in high school, college, professional, technical, vocational, and
  • trade school; or certificate program lasting at least one year;
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above.

The NIH Internship Program offers mentorship throughout the program, individual development planning, professional development, training activities and opportunities for career development.

 

As an NIH Intern (Program Support Assistant (OA)) you will:

  • Establish and maintain office files.
  • Receive incoming calls and visitors.
  • Provide callers and visitors with general information.
  • Prepare a variety of standardized documents from rough draft and/or oral instructions.
  • Process and distribute mail to appropriate individuals.
  • Develop documents using a variety of office automation applications.
  • Perform special projects.

To qualify for the GS-5: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to a GS-04 in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector OR have a bachelor's degree or at least four (4) years of progressive post high school education OR a combination of education and experience.  Examples of qualifying experience include: performing clerical tasks related to processing paperwork  related to administrative duties, utilizing automated systems and software applications, inputting information into databases, assisting with providing logistical support for program staff, preparing travel documents, providing general office support to staff.

 

To qualify for the GS-6: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to a GS-05 in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples of qualifying experience include: receiving visitors/phone calls, directing caller to appropriate staff; maintaining files; maintaining policies/procedures/documents for ready reference; maintaining office supplies; arranging equipment repair, and/or office moves; performing travel-related duties; utilizing automated systems and software applications, inputting information into databases, assisting with providing logistical support for program staff,  etc.


To qualify for the GS-7: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to a GS-06 in the Federal Government obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples of qualifying experience include: performing administrative support functions re: HR, security, travel, training, files management, budget, supplies and inventory, property accountability, or space management; developing/implementing office procedures; maintaining employee records, performance appraisals, job descriptions, etc.


To be eligible for appointment, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time bases at a qualifying educational institution, for the purpose of obtaining a diploma, degree, or certificate program lasting at least one year.

 

Current students must have a grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or higher.  We DO NOT round.

 

Appointee must maintain a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average throughout the duration of the internship.

Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
