Join the NIH for an exciting opportunity! We are looking for talented, hardworking interns to perform essential functions in our 27 Institutes and Centers.

 

The NIH Internship Program is for current students who are enrolled in high school, college, professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; or certificate program lasting at least one year. It is intended to promote possible careers in the civil service to students and individuals accepted for enrollment in a qualifying educational program.

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • At least 16 years of age;
  • U.S. Citizen, non-citizen, national or legal permanent resident;
  • Must be a U.S. citizen prior to conversion to a competitive appointment;
  • Must be enrolled half time in a high school, college, professional,
  • technical, vocational, trade school; or certificate program; and
  • Must be in good academic standing (cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above)

The NIH Internship Program offers mentorship throughout the program, individual development planning, professional development, training activities and opportunities for career development.

 

As a NIH Intern (Program Support Assistant) you will:

  • Establish and maintain office files.
  • Receive incoming calls and visitors.
  • Provide callers and visitors with general information.
  • Prepare a variety of standardized documents from rough draft and/or oral instructions.
  • Process and distribute mail to appropriate individuals.
  • Develop documents using a variety of office automation applications.
  • Perform special projects.

To qualify for the GS-1: You must be enrolled in a high school diploma or GED program. Examples of general experience include:  filing paperwork, using computer software, answering phone calls, and directing correspondence to the appropriate individual. 

 

To qualify for the GS-2: You must demonstrate in your resume at least three (3) months of general work experience OR have at least a high school diploma OR a combination of education and experience.  Examples of general experience include:  filing paperwork, using computer software, answering phone calls, and directing coorespondence to the appropriate individual.

 

To qualify for the GS-3: You must demonstrate in your resume at least six (6) months of general work experience OR have at least one (1) year of post high school education OR a combination of education and experience.  Examples of general experience include: filing paperwork, using computer software, answering phone calls, and directing coorespondence to the appropriate individual.

 

To qualify for the GS-4: You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of general work experience OR have at least two (2) years of post high school education OR a combination of education and experience.  Examples of general experience include: filing paperwork, using computer software, answering phone calls, and directing coorespondence to the appropriate individual.

 


To be eligible for appointment, you must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time bases at a qualifying educational institution, for the purpose of obtaining a diploma, degree, or certificate program lasting at least one year.

 

Current students must have a grade point average of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or higher.  We DO NOT round.

 

Appointee must maintain a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average throughout the duration of the internship.

Males born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
