As an Electronics Engineer in the Applied Crash Avoidance Division, you are responsible for the design, management, and accomplishment of smaller, less complex, research, development, test, and evaluation projects in support of Agency crash avoidance research projects with a focus on automotive electronics, cyber security, electronics system reliability, and active safety research. You will plan, manage, and conduct complex analytical and test programs that will assist in the improvement of automotive electronics and safety systems so as to increase automotive safety on our nation's highways. You will be expected to become an expert in crash avoidance (particularly automotive electronics, cyber security, electronics system reliability, and active safety research) research.

The ideal candidate for this position possesses a broad based, mid-level or above, general knowledge of modern automotive crash avoidance and mitigation systems, especially of the electronic aspects of such systems.  Practical experience testing modern crash avoidance systems is essential.  The ideal candidate must have the ability to provide technical leadership to project teams.  To be successful at assisting the agency in its goal of improving automotive safety through better, more advanced, automotive electronics, the ideal candidate must be a self-starter, work with minimal supervision, have good oral communication skills, excellent written communication skills, and work cooperatively with other offices within NHTSA.

As an Electronics Engineer, you will:

  • Oversee accomplishment of research, development, test, and evaluation projects in support of NHTSA crash avoidance research so as to improve safety on our nation's highways.
  • Research will focus on automotive electronics, cyber security, electronics system reliability, and active safety.
  • Provide technical direction and leadership to contract staff who are assigned to work on your projects.
  • Present research findings in the form of oral presentations at meetings and technical conferences, NHTSA technical reports, and technical papers.

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND (3) meet either the education or experience qualifications for the grade at which you are requesting consideration.


To qualify for the GS-11, you must have:

  • one year of specialized equal or equivalent experience performing crash avoidance research in automotive electronics control systems and active safety systems AND Experience presenting research results orally and/or in written form
  • or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or equivalent doctoral degree
  • or a combination of Education and Experience.

To qualify for the GS-12, you must, in addition to meeting the GS-11 qualifications, have:

  • one year of specialized equal or equivalent experience providing leadership and technical direction to project teams.

All applicants must meet one of the following requirements to qualify for consideration for an engineering position:

  • Successful completion of a professional engineering degree at an accredited university or college OR
  • Have a combination of college level education or training AND technical experience that has furnished you with (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and
    (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:

  1. Professional registration as a engineer
  2. Evidence of Passing the Engineer-in-Training  Written Test
  3. Successful documented completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences as  described by OPM.
  4. Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field and at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
