Incumbent works with substantial freedom within an area of primary interest in the field of chemistry or biochemistry. Within the context of a broad assignment, is fully responsible for identifying, defining, and selecting specific problems for review, study and determining what appear to be the most fruitful investigations and approaches to the problem area. Formulates hypotheses and develops and carries out the review of chemical studies, coping with novel, difficult, and unexpected problems. Leads reviews of tobacco products, formulating systematic approaches to complex problems in the field of chemistry/biochemistry.  Works with substantial freedom and exercises significant professional judgment.  Extends and modifies approaches, precedents, and methods to solve difficult chemical problems. Provides leadership within immediate organization involving the chemistry of tobacco products and enjoys recognition in the relevant research/review community.
