The Pathways Internship Program is a streamlined program which replaces the Student Education Employment Program (SEEP) by consolidating the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and the Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). The Program is designed to attract students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions (high school, home-school programs, vocational and technical, undergraduate and graduate) with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. This program exposes students to jobs in the Federal civil service by providing meaningful development work at the beginning of their career, before their careers paths are fully established.
Temporary appointments may be extended without further competition. An agency may convert an Intern non-competitively from the Internship Program to a term or permanent position in the competitive service provided that all the terms of section 5 CFR 362.204 are met and there is an available position. However, conversion is not mandatory or guaranteed. U.S. citizenship is required to be eligible for conversion.
Internship positions are located within various offices at IHS Headquarters in Rockville, Maryland.

To qualify for this position, you must meet ONE of the following criteria:
GS-1 Level: Enrollment in a high school diploma or GED program
GS-2 Level: High school diploma or equivalent
GS-3 Level: Completion of 1 academic year of post-high school study
GS-4 Level: Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study or associates degree
Eligibility Requirements: In order to be eligible for an appointment under the
Pathways Internship Program:
- You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree, GED,
or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school
(certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying
educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time
study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational,
or business school curriculum);
- Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school
or state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school;
a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g.,
law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum;
- Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing, maintaining a
2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis.
You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.
You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
