This vacancy will be used to fill (1) part-time (20 hours per week) 1 year temporary appointment, which may be extended on a year to year basis.  The tour of duty is to be determined.

NOTE:  Applicant's education and length of practice (experience) will be considered by a Professional Standards Board and Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected. 

Grade determination will be based on the incumbent meeting the basic requirements and additional criteria for each grade according to the VA Handbook 5005 Part II, Appendix G4, Podiatrist Qualification Standard.  The grade/rate breakdown is as follows:

 

GS-08 (Associate Grade) $57,408-$74,628

GS-09 (Full Grade) $68,809-$89,450

GS-11 (Intermediate Grade) $81,823-$106,369

GS-12 (Senior Grade) $96,690-$125,695

This position is in the Department of Surgery (Podiatry Service).  The selected Staff Podiatrist is responsible for management of diagnostic, preventive, and/or therapeutic podiatric foot and ankle services including surgery in both operating room and clinic setting.  The incumbent is a recognized expert in dealing with a variety of difficult lower extremity wound, medical and surgical cases.  Maintains clinical and administrative records as required.  The incumbent will work closely with non-surgical podiatrists as well as general, vascular, and orthopedic surgeons on staff.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of podiatric medicine or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affiars.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice podiatry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • English Language Proficiency.  Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Preferred Experience: Board qualified or certified by a specialty board (American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine or American Board of Podiatric Surgery).  Should have the equivalent of 5 years practice experience in treating a complex patient population.

Education.  Degree of doctor of podiatric medicine, or its equivalent, from a school of podiatric medicine approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.  Approved schools are United States schools of podiatric medicine approved by the Council on Podiatry Education of the American Podiatry Association in the year in which the degree was granted.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending.  Incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable, and capable to perform the duties of the position.
