This is a full-time, temporary appointment not-to-exceed one year with the Norfork National Fish Hatchery in Mountain Home, AR.  This position may be extended at management's discretion without further recruitment.  

Two positions may filled from this vacancy announcement.

·         Cares for eggs, fry, and fish throughout the rearing and distribution cycle, including feeding, sorting, collecting, measuring, transferring, or tagging.

·         Monitors the appearance of fish for obvious changes in appearance or activity and reports observations to supervisors.

·         Administers preventative and curative disease treatment in prescribed amounts and collects water samples.

·         Records, computes and summarizes data on fish such as size, weight, sex, age, mortalities, etc., in tabular, graphic or narrative form.

·         Operates various equipment such as gates, pumps, valves, filters and sterilizers to regulate water quantity and quality.

Although no specific amount of experience, education or training is required, applicants must meet a minimum level of ability in relation to the position and the Assessment Questionnaire in order to be rated qualified for consideration. To be qualified candidates must meet any screen out element(s) listed at an “acceptable” level, and must achieve an average rating of at least “acceptable” on all of the elements. Only education, training, or experience acquired before the closing date will be considered.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

·         The work requires considerable physical exertion such as walking over wet, muddy, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, seining, and netting.

·         Items up to 20 pounds are routinely lifted and items weighing up to 75 pounds are lifted occasionally.

·         The work is mainly performed outdoors.

·         Temperatures and weather extremes are encountered in the performance of outdoor work.

This is a temporary position.  At management's discretion, this apppointment may be extended without further competition.  TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS DO NOT CONFER COMPETITIVE STATUS AND DO NOT LEAD TO PERMANENT APPOINTMENTS.

 

The employee selected will be required to work a non-standard tour of duty that may include weekends and night shifts.

 

The employee will be frequently required to travel from assigned duty station to various areas inside and outside jurisdictional boundaries of the Region.

 

Government housing may be available.

 

The incumbent will be required to obtain and wear an official U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service uniform.

 

Incumbent must be able to operate a government-owned or leased motor vehicle. A valid state driver's license is required. 

 

Must be able to frequently lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally over 70 pounds.

 

This positions sensitivity level has been designated as non-sensitive.  Accordingly, the selectee must undergo a background investigation prior to appointment.
