The Surface Transportation Board (STB) is a small independent Federal agency (created by the Interstate Commerce Commission Termination Act of 1995) with broad regulatory authority over railroads and more limited regulatory responsibilities over certain water carriers, non-energy pipelines, trucking companies, and intercity bus companies.   

STB is currently seeking interested applicants for the position of Informantion Technology Specialist (Pathways Intern).  This position is located at the Surface Transportation Board, Office of Managing Director (OMD), Section of Systems Services.  The purpose of this position is to serve as a member of the Help Desk support team, responsible for responding to and resolving a variety of hardward and software problems.

As an STB Intern, your major duties may include:

  • Receives, reponds to, and ensures resolution of all types of help desk requests.
  • Assists with network and systems administrator functions to include conducting research, providing recommendations, installing, confirguring, integrating, documenting, and maintaining the network infrastructure in support of STB's mission.
  • Provides assistance to senior personnel in planning, monitoring and conducting special studies, projects and initiatives.
  • Performs inventory management functions for support equipment to ensure proper accountability.
  • Trains customers in the use of systems and applications.


This is an opportunity under the Internship Program component of the Pathways Programs. The Internship Program provides students enrolled in colleges and other qualifying educational institutions with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while completing their education. Veteran's Preference will be applied in filling positions under the Pathways Programs.

Interns will be required to sign an agreement that outlines the parameters of the Internship Program during employment with STB.

The Internship Program allows students an opportunity to be converted non-competitively to a career-conditional or term position once the student completes all requirements of the Internship Program.

Noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position is not guaranteed. The Intern’s eligibility for conversion does not guarantee that the agency will opt for conversion.

You must have 1 year of work experience assisting senior computer specialist and providing various information technology customer services and support such as: providing user support and performing systems administrator duties to include setup and configuration; performing;  troubleshooting support; addressing, investigating and resolving workstation security issues; performing installation and configuration of complex software.


You must be currently attending, or enrolled to attend, an accreditied institution of higher education and progressing towards a Master's degree on at least a half-time schedule as defined by your educational facility.  Major fields of study MUST be in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field. 


In addition to meeting specialized experience, applicants must also show proficiency in 1) paying attention to detail, 2) customer service, 3) oral communication, and 4) problem solving.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  1. Ability to test, troubleshoot, and correct problems relative to interface and interoperability of system componenets such as hardware, systems software and application programs.
  2. Knowledge of office automation, telecommunication, database management, LAN/WAN, document management, User help-desk support and equipment inventory.
  3. Knowledge of customer support concepts and methods required to install operating systems, network systems, applications and equipment as to the best way to respond to user request.
  4. Ability to communicate detailed technical information verbally and in writing clear, logical and concise manner.
  5. Ability to analyze and resolve a variety of computer system security related problems.
