The VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) in LA, Jolla, CA main hospital has one (1) full-time position for a Nursing Assistant in the Medical/Surgical/Remote Telemetry Unit. Under the supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse, the Nursing Assistant (NA) functions as a member of the nursing team and assists the Registered Nurse and the Licensed Vocational Nurse in the care of patients in acute, sub acute, or chronic states of illness. The NA delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to assigned patients while developing technical competencies.

 


Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-05.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-05.

The Nursing Assistant is a position within Nursing and Patient Care Services at the VA San Diego Health Care system. The primary purpose of this position is to perform a very wide range of patient personal care, support diagnostic services, and chart activities on a regular and continual basis on a surgical, medical, neurological, rehabilitation, psychiatric or long-term care ward or clinic. The incumbent performs duties in such a way as to promote a sense of worth and dignity within each individual. The Medical/Surgical/Remote Telemetry Nursing Assistant is responsible for the evidence-based care of a group of patients, as follows: 1) support diagnostic procedures; 2) assist with technical nursing treatments; 3) provide care that incorporates the age, gender, cultural and learning needs of patients requiring basic planning and evaluation of care; 4) apply infection control measures appropriately in delivering care; 5) communicate with team members regarding patient care; 6) adhere to ethical principles and standards in delivering care; 7) enter information into patients’ records/charts; 8) apply knowledge and skill core competencies of the assigned unit to patient care; 9) use effective communication skills with co-workers to achieve desired patient outcomes; 10) provide teaching to patients; and 11) demonstrate mandatory and clinical competencies of the position. 

 

 

WORK SCHEDULE: Full time permanent, 40 hours per week, 12 hour Night-Shift with Day-Shift Orientation. Overtime, weekends, and holidays is required to meet patient care needs.

Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level OR successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation OR equivalent combinations of successfully completed related post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. A transcript or course listing must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

 

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes non professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
  • Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Qualifying with a combination of education and experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements (TRANSCRIPT OR COURSE LISTING REQUIRED).

 

 

A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week.Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Preferred Experience:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant

 

  • 3-5 years current experience in med/surg

 

  • Specialty clinical experience in medical  management of patients undergoing  chemotherapy procedures.

 

  • Ability to document using EMR and electronic inventory management supply system

 

  • Ability to care for 9-13 patients

Physical Requirements: The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over.  VASDHS is a major interdisciplinary teaching facility, serving medical and surgical inpatients and outpatients.  The incumbent must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others.  This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.  This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required.  The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.  The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.  The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.  The incumbent must be able to navigate all areas of the facility, use a keyboard, perform CPR when necessary, as well as direct others to perform it, and perform other activities of the position without any restrictions.
