This announcement is for a position being filled under the Pathways Internship Program for students in an accredited college, university, community college, and junior college; professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

The Pathways Internship Program provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to their curriculum studies and career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. To be eligible for conversion, the student employee must be capable of working at least 640 hours prior to completion of their degree requirements.

Full requirements for Conversion:

  • Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program.
  • Complete their degree or certificate requirements.
  • Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted.
  • Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant's Agreement. 
  • Perform their job successfully.
  • Must possess US citizenship in order to be converted to a career/career conditional appointment.

 

Internship Work Options:  When a student is initially hired into the Pathways Internship Program, a work schedule is documented on his/her agreement. Students will work a parallel work schedule that allows them to work while continuing their education during the semester. Students should also take into consideration the required 640 hours of work that must be completed prior to the student's graduation, so that upon graduation the student will be eligible for conversion into a permanent position. Incumbent will complete a residency consisting of at least 640 hours of work in an academic field related to the incumbent's degree of Health Administration or equivalent.   Training is intended to build upon and enhance basic knowledge, skills, and abilities previously obtained through higher education and experience.   It requires a high degree of analytical ability and specialized knowledge related to the management over VA Healthcare Delivery System.   Incumbent will acquire additional knowledge, abilities and skills relating to analyzing, planning, and professional and public-relations.

Incumbent will receive direction and guidance relating to the analysis of all areas of management including planning, organizing, implementing, coordination, controlling, evaluating, educating and improving medical, administrative and support operations of the health care system geared to the successful accomplishment of the VA mission.   Incumbent will learn how to develop and coordinate professional service budgets and distribution of resources to the various clinical services. Incumbent will develop policies, and department program goals and objectives related to the VA mission.

Eligibility Requirements:

Student Status- Applications will be accepted from degree seeking students currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited four-year college or university, graduate or professional school. Education must lead to a Master's degree with specialization in or directly related to the field in which the student trainees will receive training on the job.

Pathways Participant Agreement:  All interns are required to sign the Participant Agreement, to include the requirement of currently having a cumulative academic GPA of 2.75 or higher and at minimum, maintaining the same academic standard throughout the Internship program.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

GS-07: Successful completion of 1 full year of graduate level education in an accredited college or university.  Applicants must be annually enrolled or accepted for enrollment at least half-time in an academic course load leading to a Master's in Healthcare degree.

 

Note: Incumbent must be a Masters level student seeking a degree in Healthcare Administration from a Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) accredited program that requires a residency prior to graduation. To qualify, candidates must be enrolled during the time of the residency for two (2) semesters in the program's required residency course.
