What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school.

This is a temporary internship to complete project work that’s temporary in nature.  The appointment is not-to-exceed 1-year and can be extended without further competition based on the need of the organization for the work to continue and provided the individual continues to meet the eligibility requirements described below. 

What are the Eligibility Requirements?

In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:

  • you must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); and
  • enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved home school; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum.
  • students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis.

You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

Major Duties:

As a Student Trainee (Admin. Mgmt.) with the Arkansas Water Science Center, you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of administrative support.

Duties include:

- Provide assistance to senior administrative personnel in the preparation of a variety of administrative material required to support the organization.

- Assists in recording information necessary to provide data for internal reports.

If you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the requirements listed below:

For GS-03:

Applicants must type 40 wpm or more AND meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-03 level:

-Six months of general experience that is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled.

-OR one full year of successfully completed education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

-OR a combination of successfully completed post-high school education, as described above, and general experience, as described above.

-OR completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than 1 year may meet in full the experience requirements for the GS-3 level. Courses of this type normally require completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction rather than 20 hours per week, and are usually of at least 3 months in duration. Such courses may have been obtained through a variety of programs such as those offered by business or technical schools, and through military training programs. To be creditable, such a course must have been designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled, and must have provided the applicant with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work.

Students who successfully complete the internship program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment.
