The successful candidate for this position will serve as Deputy Chief of the Public Services Division and participate fully with the Chief in directing and managing all activities of the Division.  This position is located within the Division of Library Operations (LO), National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

Although the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world's largest library of the health sciences, with a collection of more than 12 million items, the Library also conducts research in biomedical communications, creates databases and search tools for molecular biology information resulting from the Human Genome Project, creates specialized information services in the areas of toxicology and environmental health and supports a nationwide network of medical libraries.  The Library's various Web-based databases are the world's most consulted medical information resources for scientists, health professionals, and the public.  Click on for more information.


If selected for this position, you will perform the following duties:


  • Assist the Chief in managing the operations of the Division including formulating, establishing and interpreting policies; developing, analyzing and reviewing programs; developing and implementing long-term and operational plans; developing budgetary and staffing requirements and formulating budget requests. 


  • Participate in supervising and directing the activities of the staff of approximately 72 employees with the assistance of three Section Heads and various subordinate supervisors and technical experts.


  • Plan and manage major public services activities within the Division.  Coordinate the design, development, selection, improvement, management and utilization of state-of-the-art library automation applications.  Coordinate a variety of intradivisional and interdivisional projects affecting the Division.  Develop programs to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Division activities.


  • Represent the NLM in various professional meetings and meet with key officials from other Government agencies and from the library community.
