The Perry Point VA Medical Center provides primary care and specialty outpatient services in a new outpatient care facility that was designed and constructed to better meet the needs of veterans by offering the latest medical technology, expanded clinical space and comfortable waiting areas and exam rooms.

Duties

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-11 through GS-13. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s qualifications and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed. The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

 

NOTIFICATION OF CONCURRENT VACANCIES: Please be advised; this is a multidisciplinary position. This position may also be filled as a Social Worker.

TOUR OF DUTY: This is a full-time position; 8:00am to 4:30pm.

Please note: Clinical services must be offered at least one evening per week, with the possibly of additional evening or early morning hours or weekend hours, depending on patient care needs and access to care.

PRIMARY DUTY LOCATION: Perry Point VA Medical Center. Travel may be needed at times to improve Veteran access to care.

This position is assigned to the Mental Health Clinical Center (MHCC), VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS), and serves as a Staff Psychologist, Substance Use Disorder Specialist providing addiction recovery services for Veterans in the Substance Abuse Residential Recovery Treatment Program (SARRTP). The incumbent will provide patient screening and evaluation at the Perry Point campus of our multi-site Health Care System, including: referrals, clinical counseling and all evidence based psychotherapeutic procedures, staff duties, follow-up care, treatment plans, performance measures and clinical reminders for Veterans suffering from addictive and related disorders including dually diagnosed Veterans. S/he will also assess and treat substance use/addictive disorders, psychodiagnosis, evidence based individual, group, marital, and family psychotherapy, development and updating individual treatment plans, team support and consultation, setting of treatment goals, patient screening and evaluations; which may also include MHARC (Mental Health and Referral Clinic), follow-up care, performance measures and clinical reminders. S/he will serve as a consultant to others needing guidance and direction in the management of complex, difficult patient care cases, especially involving substance use disorders in residential and other settings.

The incumbent may participate in developing and maintaining an effective relationship with multiple community-based and multiple VA-based treatment facilities within reasonable geographic distance in order to fully develop and implement a referral and aftercare for addictions. Administratively, the incumbent will be responsible for all routine and special addictions recovery reports, as needed, to local and national monitoring agencies (e.g. NEPEC, NIMH), monitoring and improving program performance on national VA measures, and all addictions quality improvement activities. The incumbent may provide training to Residential/Outpatient staff in evidenced based treatment methods and best practices for the treatment populations served. The incumbent may perform other duties as requested or assigned.
