The Psychiatric & Mental Health Advanced Practice Nurse with Rx privileges (APN) is a registered nurse who has a graduate degree in nursing and required certification with proper licensure. These position are open for the following locations: Tallahasee, FL; Ocala, FL; The Villages, FL; Waycross, GA .

The APN provides direct and indirect patient care that includes:

  • Assessment, diagnosis, planning and treatment of psychiatric and mental health problems. 
  • Education, research, and consultation
  • Function within a scope of practice commensurate with training, certification,  demonstrated expertise and licensure.  Demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care. 
  • Prescribe and/or recommend laboratory tests, diagnostic studies, and/or medications based on current Medical Center, VHA, and DEA policy and within scope of practice. 
  • Complete diagnostic and therapeutic patient care orders for inpatient stay (if applicable).
  • Complete admission, day-to-day care, transfer and discharge of patients.
  • Provide a leadership role in utilizing problem-solving methodologies to resolve system and/or process problems that impact patient care, staff performance, and/or system(s) improvements.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Tour of Duty: Rotating Shifts (Weekend, extended hours and cross-coverage for clinics in other North Fl/South GA locations may be required).

Recruitment/Relocation Incentive: Up to $10,000 may be authorized for highly qualified candidates.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship
  • English language proficiency (written and spoken)
  • Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.
  • Registration – Current, full, active and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia. The RN must maintain a current, full active and unrestricted registration to continue employment with the VA.
  • Educational requirements can be met as follows: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State agency, and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed: a) The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC); or b) The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active, and unrestricted registration, will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Nurse Practitioners. A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.] Board Certification as an Advanced Practice Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse from ANCC,  and a minimum of two years of clinical experience . Newly certified and licensed APNs are eligible if they have previous clinical experience with psychiatric and mental health patients. Must have a current, full, active and unrestricted license as an Advanced Practice Nurse; physical and mental capabilities to satisfactorily perform duties of the assignment
  • Prescriptive authority requirements include evidence of national certification and completion of upper division education in pharmacology. 

Preferred experience requirements:

  • Mental health experience.

Grade Determinations:

  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, no experience.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.  
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.
