 DUTY LOCATION/CAMPUS:  Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Little Rock Campus

 

 TOUR OF DUTY:  Monday - Friday, Day Shift, with rotating weekends and holidays

  Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System is recruiting for a Medical Technologist Senior Staff Specialist (Hematology).

 

 Area of Consideration:  The initial area of consideration is this Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). Management retains the right to select any appropriate recruitment methods such as current Federal employees serving on a career or career-conditional appointment, Reinstatement eligibles, those eligible for a non-competitive appointment under a Special Appointing Authority such as those for disabled veterans, those eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) under the  Veterans’ Employment Opportunities Act of 1998,veterans eligible for a VEOA appointment, severely disabled individuals, Interchange Agreements with other Agencies, etc. Candidates from other sources may be considered only after consideration has been given the best qualified candidates from this CAVHS. Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10. The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

·         Responsible for automated analytical instrument system, laboratory functions, competency records, supply functions, quality control review, new methods of development, employee training and providing professional and technical advice to other technicians and technologists.

·         Develops protocols for performance of tests and evaluation of results.

·         Performs validation/method verification studies for new systems

·         Ensures laboratory tests and procedures are consistent with accrediting agencies requirements.

·         Provides communication and information according to policy and procedures, handles conflicts and problems, protects sensitive data.

·         Responsible for monitoring quality control systems and measures, collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients and provide education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals and others in the medical center and public.

·         Will serve in the hematology/coagulation department as the acting supervisor in the absence of the supervisor and in compliance issues.

·         Will also serve as the quality management subject matter expert for the hematology/coagulation department.

·         Will be required to work the bench as needed.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.   

 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:  Minimum Required:  Bachelor’s degree in medical technology/clinical laboratory science or in a related science and completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Both education and the clinical practice program must have been approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).  The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post-baccalaureate certificate or integrated into a four-year program of study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree.  All candidates must currently possess the appropriate certification as a medical technologist or clinical laboratory scientist given by the American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR), the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Association of Clinical Chemists (AACC), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).  Experience (at least 1 year) in hematology preferred.

Experience/Education Combination.  Completion of 1 year of experience at the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled.  Must have 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master’s degree in medical technology or directly related field, or equivalent graduate degree provided the applicant’s degree in medical technology or directly related field, or equivalent graduate degree provided the applicant’s total background demonstrates the core competencies for GS-9 level assignment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   Regular and recurrent standing to perform tests, walking between the different areas of the laboratory, regular sitting at computers and keyboarding, sitting and looking in a microscope, reaching and bending to obtain supplies and operate instruments, occasionally must lift heavy containers of reagents and occasionally push a cart.
