We are recruiting for one (1) Nursing Assistant "sitter" position here at the Dallas VA Medical Center in Nursing Service.  Come join our progressive team of providers as a "sitter" providing monitoring of confused or fall risk patients as an alternative to physical restraints. Communicates with Nursing staff to determine when unscheduled work must be accomplished and/or interfaced with other ward activities to support the timely delivery of direct patient care services.  Provides simple tasks such as feeding, performing personal hygiene, intake & output, assisting with repositioning in bed, chair and stretcher. Safe patient transfer using lifts, sliding boards, and safety equipment. Able to use hospital/medical equipment, i.e. oxygen tanks, IV poles, PPEs, etc.  Documentation of patient activities during assigned shift.  Delivers ice water, facial tissue, other comfort items, and bedside waste bags to patients.  Observes and reports obvious changes in a patient's physical condition or emotional status, i.e. hemorrhage, cyanosis, respiratory distress, aspiration of mucus, different unusual behavior to a professional nurse and records in the patient's record.  Incumbent performs cleaning of all patient units, supply room, nursing station.  Changes bed linen and cleans bed unit of unoccupied bed when patient is out of bed.  Also, incumbent is responsible for completion of all assigned tasks and receives general supervision and detailed instruction and have the ability to write legibly and to communicate effectively.  Stocks treatment rooms, bathrooms and patient rooms with non-medication supplies.  Cleans ward equipment, refrigerators, counter tops, built-ins, sinks, utility rooms, washer and dryers (if appropriate), bathtubs (once per day) and provides minor spill pick-up.  Passes out clean linen and returns late food trays to Diabetic Service.  Performs other similar duties of a simple nature associated with services to the patient and in the patients' immediate environment.  Must have computer knowledge and skills. Must have knowledge of basic emergency procedures.  Have knowledge and ability to comply with Infection Control Standards.  The incumbent observes safety, sanitary and fire protection rules/regulations, and is responsible to any hazard and the need to initiate measures to eliminate the hazard and prevent injury. Must have telephone etiquette and positive customer service relations. 

 

 

Tours of duty: All tours will rotate Days, Evenings, Nights, Weekends and Holidays.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Public Law 95-201 requires that any applicant appointed to a direct patient-care position be proficient in spoken and written English.   Responses to the online assessment questionnaire will be a primary source for determining qualifications.  In addition, applicants must meet the following requirements: 

GS-3: Must have 6 months of general experience. 

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:

(1)   Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant’s ability to perform the work of the position; or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.  Specialized experience may be substituted for general experience.  

OR

Education and Training:

GS-3: Successful completion of 1-year above high school with course(s) related to the occupation.

You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:

1.  Must have telephone etiquette and positive Customer Service relations.

 

2.  Knowledge and ability to operate a computer.
