JOB SUMMARY:

 

The mission of the National Finance Center: To design, develop, implement and operate, cost-effective, financial, administrative, and management information system and services supporting the missions of the USDA and its customers.

This position is located in the Office of Chief Financial Officer, National Finance Center (OCFO/NFC), Administrative Management Staff, Support Service Office (AMS/SSO)

 

This vacancy may be used to fill additional similar positions within OCFO/NFC.

The primary purpose of this position is to transport bulk supplies, office furniture and/or equipment to and from the National Finance Center (NFC), by operating a gasoline/diesel powered truck with gross vehicle weight of 33,000 pounds and capable of carrying loads weighing up to five tons.   

As a Motor Vehicle Operator, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Operate a gasoline/diesel powered truck in accordance with the schedule to transport bulk supplies, furniture and/or office equipment.
  • Inspect the vehicle regularly to assure proper levels of fuels, oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, battery water, tire pressure, etc. are maintained in accordance with specifications of the operators manual.
  • Deliver the vehicle to GSA service area for scheduled and required maintenance.
  • Operate an electric forklift (walker stacker) in cramped and confined quarters to lift and move objects weighing more than seventy pounds.  Ensures material are properly loaded and balanced in accordance with capability and limits of forklift.
  • Move and arrange furniture as specified on work requests. Coordinate with the coordinator prior to delivery of furniture to avoid conflicting schedules or change in operations.
  • Assist warehouse personnel when shipments are received at the warehouse in placing and arranging items in storage locations in consideration of type, stock number and other identifying factors. 
  • Loads and unloads furniture, heavy boxes, supplies and materials by hand to and/or from pallets, forklifts, dollies, vans, trucks and assuring vehicle is not overloaded and that cargo is arranged properly for best support.

EXPERIENCE:  A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of the position.  Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume.   

PHYSICAL EFFORT:  The incumbent must have excellent eyesight, depth and color perception, and use of all limbs and be capable of prolonged walking, running, standing, climbing and crawling.  Frequently handles equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  Works typically performed in a motor vehicle and outside setting.  It should be noted that the incumbent may be exposed to safety hazards.  Incumbent may be exposed to hazards during outside duties.  Incumbent works in all weather conditions and will be exposed to the elements (rain, wind, sunshine, etc.)  Drivers are exposed to dirt, fumes and to the possibility of cuts and bruises as a result of accidents when loading and unloading the vehicle.

 

MEDICAL EXAMINATION:  All applicants are required to pass a pre-employment medical examination provided at government expense before tentative offer of employment is made.

3.     Qualified Category.   Meets the minimum qualifications and demonstrates minimum experience and/or training only based on responses to occupational questionnaire.

The category assignment is a measure of the degree in which your background matches the competencies required for this position. - Knowledge of defensive driving techniques necessary to recognize developing hazardous conditions.

- Skilled in handling the controls for starting, stopping, backing and driving the vehicle.

- Skilled in handling controls for starting, stopping, backing and driving forklift truck through narrow aisles in building, up and down ramps and in and out of trucks.

- Ability to use extreme care when delivering, rearranging or placing furniture.
