Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below and/or the GENERAL/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE requirements.
GS-4: 2-years of education beyond the high school level that included at least 8 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture, or physics.
GS-5: 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree years that included at least 16 semester hours in courses such as biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture, or physics. GS-6: Half year or 9 semester hours of graduate education in biology, plant pathology, entomology, zoology, botany, forestry, chemistry, agriculture, or physics.

GENERAL/SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-4 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants must have both 6 months general work experience and 6 months of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the next lower level in the Federal service. Applicants who have one year of appropriate specialized experience are not required to have general experience. Specialized experience must provide a familiarity with the methods, procedures, and techniques involved in inspecting, detecting, identifying, eradicating, suppressing, or controlling plant pests, and in the enforcement of Federal and State quarantines.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-5/6 GRADE LEVELS: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the next lower level in the Federal Service. This experience may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors.

- Assists in performing routine surveillance, inspections, and surveys for nematodes and other pests of concern in agricultural areas
- Performs inspections and sanitation of farm equipment, vehicles, and other regulated articles
- Analyzes soil samples for the presence of nematodes
- Applies general understanding of plant biology and plant pest principles to insect and plant identification
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-5/6 GRADE LEVELS:
- Assists in contacting stakeholders, (i.e., landowners, tenants, managers, equipment operators, etc) to perform outreach activities, obtain permission to conduct surveys, and enforce regulations
- Directs lower graded employees in performing soil surveys and analyses for the presence of harmful insects, plants, or plant diseases in soil samples
Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and general/specialized experience (as specified per grade level) to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level. Work is primarily outdoors with moderate exposure to uncomfortable and dangerous situations, such as working in adverse weather conditions and around large agricultural related machinery.
Requires physical exertion to walk, bend, stoop, lift items of moderate weight, and climb or hike on slippery and uneven surfaces.
Considerable travel may be required; assignments may require extended work in remote/rural areas.
