The initial average hours per week will be 16-32 hours and may fluctuate based on workload and training requirements. This is a mix of day, evening, and weekend hours. The Selectee will be duty stationed to the Providence, Utah Metropolitan Area and will initiate and transmit work from his/her home. NOTE: Visits to residences are necessary and evening and weekend work is scheduled. In addition, you must travel to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Training Center in Washington, DC two times during the first 18 months. First time is a two week mandatory classroom training and the second time for a one week of mandatory classroom training. You will attend mandatory Housing Survey Training in your local area. This position has promotion potential to the grade of GS-07. Relocation expenses have not been authorized

Collect prices and related statistical data on a wide variety of commodities, services, and housing for the BLS Consumer Price Index. Duties include, but are not limited to: 1. Visiting retail and service establishments such as stores, supermarket, medical offices, and hotels to collect retail price data. A limited amount of data is collected by telephone/fax. 2. Contacting homeowners, renters, and apartments management companies by personal visit to neighborhoods and follow up telephone interviews. 3. Collecting and entering data on a hand held computer. 4. Obtaining voluntary cooperation from survey respondents.

 To qualify, applicants must one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service; OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above high school with major study in economics, or 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as business law, statistics, algebra, recalculus, calculus, or economics. Equivalent combinations of education and experience is qualifying. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must demonstrate the applicant's ability to perform research or related work that involved collecting, compelling, verifying, analyzing, or reporting data. Direct contact with, and direct sales to the public is a plus. Examples of specialized experience include: Experience in retail environments, such as clerks in a large grocery stores and associates in large retail outlets. Specific knowledge of a wide variety of assorted products and or services(s) offered by an outlet. Knowledge of products and service specifications. Real estate experience in selling and public outreach, e.g., open house showings. Specific knowledge of area sales and housing stock, pricing and customer base. Experience selling items door to door or at house parties. Education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week or approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to one year of specialized experience.
