Independently performs vascular angiographic procedures such as Angiography, Balloon Angioplasty/Stent, Endovascular Aneurysm Repair, Embolization, Drain insertions, IVC Filters, Vertebroplasty, Nephrostomy Placement, AV Fistulas, PICC Line Placements, Lumbar Punctures, Hip Injections, cardiovascular and other related General Diagnostic, Interventional and/or therapeutic imaging procedures, with the majority of the workload focused around angiography and general diagnostic procedures. Use of portable x-ray equipment, mobile intensifier units and other equipment may be required to complete the requested procedure(s). Evaluates critical and emergency procedures and rearranges schedule to accommodate the situation. Procedures may require utilization of contrast materials and sterile techniques.  The purpose of these procedures is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment.

The incumbent performs moderate to complex diagnostic and therapeutic radiographic procedures that may require utilization of contrast materials and sterile techniques. The incumbent assists the professional staff in the performance of these examinations utilizing highly sophisticated x-ray equipment such as pressure injectors, defibrillator, patient monitors, PACS, digital radiography, etc. to achieve a high quality diagnostic and/or therapeutic study.  Incumbent participates in the performance of quality assurance activities (i.e. staff meetings, quality control reports, advanced clinic access (ACA), timeliness, etc.) for the purpose of improving overall performance.

This position is located administratively in the Radiology Service Line, Interventional and Diagnostic Section but the incumbent’s duties and responsibilities are exercised throughout assigned clinical or patient care areas of the medical center.

Incumbent must be professional, cooperative and be able to work effectively with other employees.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Citizenship.  Citizen of the United States.  (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.)

Certification.  All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R).

Experience or Education.  Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate’s degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), and certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in radiology.

             (1)  Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.  Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and be certified as radiographers in their field.

              (2)  Non-certified applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for ARRT (R) certification may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate DRT under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D).  Failure to obtain certification during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.  This may result in termination of employment.

GS-9

          (a)  Experience.  Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.  In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*).

          (b)  Assignments.  For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.  DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments:

            1.  Staff DRT.  Employees at this level are fully functional as a DRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently.  DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex radiographic procedures.  Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level.

          a.  Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

          *(1) Ability to balance the needs of the patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures;

           (2)  Skill to demonstrate appropriate techniques to gather relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers;

          *(3)  Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure;

           (4)  Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography;

           (5)  Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous skills, and universal precautions; and

           (6)  Knowledgeable in pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have the ability to stand, walk and bend for prolonged periods and to function calmly under stress.  There must be a high degree of eye-hand coordination and the ability to assist in lifting or transporting the patient when the need arises.  A high degree of care is necessary in working with equipment that presents shock hazard or possible sticks or laceration.
