Position Summary:

The E-Scan (Specialty Care Access Network Extension for Community Care Outcomes) NP is a clinical position in Gastroenterology with administrative responsibility to lead the planning of E-SCAN events, and coordinate the development and implementation of local E-SCAN conferences.   The E-SCAN NP is responsible for participating in the development and implementation of the quality, safety, efficiency, and satisfaction outcomes assessment.   In addition the NP is responsible for assuring the acquisition of continuing education credit for E-SCAN participants.

The E-SCAN NP is responsible for contributing to the ongoing maturation and evaluation of the national E-SCAN program by data collection and feedback, contribution to development and modification of policy and procedure including standard operation procedures.   The E-SCAN NP is responsible for assisting the national program office in outreach as a conduit of communication between local health care teams and leadership.   The E-SCAN NP is expected to contribute to the national program effort by providing consultation to and replication of the program in newly developing sites.   The position promotes safe, effective patient-centered and timely specialty care to patients.  

This position requires the ability to assist in forming and promoting relationships between primary care and the specialty care, to collaborate with local, VISN and national leadership and to promote the vision of the SCAN program.

This position requires a mixture of direct patient care, program administration and coordination, and leadership skill.

This position includes an emphasis on Hepatitis C management and will provide direct support throughout a variety of clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive health areas. 

Duties include:

·         Conducting outpatient Hepatology and Gastroenterology clinics with an emphasis on Hepatitis C. 

·         Conducting selective diagnostic tests or procedures; procedures include Flexible Sigmoidoscopies and Paracentesis.

·         Establishing and maintaining collaborative and communicative relationships within Hepatits C and other clinical, ancillary or administrative services within or outside the VA Medical Center

·         Responsible for preliminary mental health evaluations of patients prior to hepatitis C patients and the significant others

·         May be active in recruiting and managing patients in clinical trials/research

·         Initiate and conduct risk factor modification programs for patient with liver disease (including pre and post liver transplant.

Tour of Duty:   Candidate must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours.  The candidate must be willing to be placed, detailed or temporarily assigned to other related services and/or locations, if necessary.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.  The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. 
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  

  • Master's of Science in Nursing with a major as a nurse practitioner from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE at time of graduation.

Preferred Experience:

·         At least three years experience in a specialty care service, preferred

·         Additional primary care, internal medicine or family practice experience, preferred

·         Experience in analysis and education, preferred

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.
