The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) is responsible for ensuring safety of the Nation's passenger and freight rail operations and infrastructure by promoting safe, efficient and accessible rail transportation. The mission and focus of FRA has grown to include the design and management of an unprecedented investment in the creation of a nationwide passenger rail network. FRA is providing leadership for the creation of a more balanced transportation system, transforming the way Americans travel.
This position is located in the Office of the Associate Administrator for Safety, Office of Safety Assurance and Compliance, Operating Practices Staff, in Washington, D.C. You will serve as a Senior Railroad Safety Specialist and team leader who is responsible for the notification, investigation, and analysis of railroad accidents nationwide. You will independently plan, design, and carry out work assignments and provide guidance to team members. You are considered a technical authority in the areas of railroad facilities, equipment, and operations; railroad safety regulations and procedures; and in the preparation of reports for public issuance. You will direct, coordinate, and analyze major railroad accident investigations that occur, and serve as a point of contact in providing liaison with the National Response Center (NRC), National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Department of Labor, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSFIA).
This position is for a senior level professional who has a comprehensive background as a technical authority in the investigation and analysis of major railroad accidents and railroad employee injuries. Professional experience should also include serving as a technical expert in the areas of railroad facilities, equipment, and operations; railroad safety regulations and procedures; and in the preparation of reports for public issuance.
Please note: This position will be located in Washington, DC, and may be eligible to telework on a Regular or AD HOC bases with supervisor’s approval.
The Railroad Safety Specialist:
- Functions as the team leader for staff assigned to analyze railroad accidents. Is responsible for analyzing and leading the analysis of all major railroad accidents nationwide and responding appropriately to Office of Safety Freedom of Information Act requests.
- Coordinates assignments and the completion of accident investigations nationwide. Reviews and approves findings and conclusions of accident reports resulting from these investigations.
- Is responsible for the communication, such as correspondences with railroads, railway labor organizations, railroad industry associations, other government agencies, and the general public on railroad accident investigation matters.
