The incumbent will be assigned to the 24 x 7 Inpatient Pharmacy Department of the West Roxbury Division of VA Boston Health Systems. The department supports the tertiary care division with fully computerized physician order entry and bar code medication administration. The incumbent prepares and/or compounds hazardous and/or non-hazardous inpatient drug orders for dispensing to include unit dose, bar code packaged oral solids and liquids according to established procedures and protocols. The incumbent maintains all competencies and prepares sterile products using aseptic technique, in accordance with USP 797 standards. Duties assigned may include stocking and maintenance of all Pharmacy managed areas; bulk compounding; chemotherapy compounding, pre-packaging, recording of quality control data and  proper use and maintenance of complex equipment including, but not limited to, Omnicell cabinets , Prepacking automation and robotic delivery equipment. The incumbent will be responsible for replenishment and delivery of stock to all wards and Units , and other duties as assigned.

WORK SCHEDULE:  Full Time - Overnight hours: Tour of Duty will be four 10 hour shifts from 9:00pm - 7:00am rotation through weekend, holidays as needed . May be required to work other approved tours as deemed necessary.

NOTE:  This position is a NAGE Bargaining Unit position.
NOTE:  This position is covered by locality-based comparability pay.
NOTE:  Selectee may be required to work at any Boston Healthcare System campus, as needed.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

      a.   Citizenship.   Citizen of the United States.  (Noncitizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, this part.) 

      b.   Education or Experience.   A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience. 

      c.   Certification.   Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6. 

      d. Specialized Experience:  = 1 year of experience in an inpatient pharmacy and/ or = 2 years experience in a retail pharmacy setting. 

APPLICANTS MEETING THE QUALIFICATION STANDARDS WILL BE EVALUATED ON THE FOLLOWING KSAO'S FOR THE GS-6: 

GS-6 

      (a)   Experience.   One year experience at the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at the next lower level.   In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs. 

      (b)   Certification.   PTCB certification is required at this grade level and above. 

      (c)   Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

      1.   Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g., troubleshoot operational problems and refer for appropriate action. 

      2.   Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment. 

      3.   Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. 

      4.   Experience with Script Pro outpatient automation. 

      5.   Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts. 

      6.   Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. 

(d)   Assignments.   Pharmacy technicians may be assigned to any area of the pharmacy including expanded distributive function assignments; for example assignment as team leaders for specific process improvement teams involving technical areas or performing more highly complex duties including preparation of oncology agents for clinical pharmacy specialists.   For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time.
