ANDQUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GS-7: You must have specialized experience and/or education directly related to this position, which has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the assigned duties. You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to the next lower grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g. biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled. Also has technical aspects of the position accessioning samples into the computer system assuring positive patient specimen identification, accurate specimen labeling, and special handling of identified specimens; monitoring blood culture instrument, performing subcultures of positive samples and computer data entry; monitoring refrigerator and incubator temperatures; performing tests such as occult blood, Clo tests and Clostridium Difficele; performing quality control, reports and verifies patient results in the computer; teaching microbiology specimen processing to medical technology students and new staff. ~OR You must possess one (1) full year of graduate education related to the position. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position to be creditable. A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Incumbent must be capable of prolonged standing, frequent bending and occasional moderate lifting (10 15 bs). Incumbent works under an environmental hood for long periods with arms outstretched while streaking plates.
Work is perfumed in a large microbiology laboratory. The work involves regular and recurring risks which require special safety precautions i.e. contagious diseases or irritant chemicals. Although safety procedures are followed, incumbent may be exposed to biological and chemical hazards such as hepatitis, HIV, and infectious microorganisms commonly found in a microbiology setting.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Applicants will be ranked based on four quality groups, as follows:
- Best qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
- Highly qualified - applicants possessing experience that exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in most of the requirements of the job;
- Well qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job; and
- Qualified - applicants possessing experience and/or education that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors.
After the vacancy announcement closes, reviewed applications are evaluated against the questionnaire responses and placed in the appropriate quality group. Qualified veterans will be afforded preference by being placed at the top of the appropriate quality group. Qualifying veterans with a service-connected disability of 10% or more will be placed at the top of the best qualified group.
