JOB SUMMARY:

We are the Office of Inspector General within the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).  As required by the Inspector General Act of 1978, we conduct and supervise audits and investigations to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse and promote economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the administration of SBA programs and operations.

The SBA-OIG Pathways Internship Program is designed to attract students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions (high school, home-school programs, vocational and technical, undergraduate and graduate) with paid opportunities to explore Federal careers while still in school.  This Program exposes students to jobs in the Federal civil service by providing meaningful developmental work at the beginning of their careers, before their career paths are fully established.  The flexible nature of the Program also accommodates the need to hire students to complete temporary work or projects, or to work traditional "summer jobs."

The ideal candidate for this position is pursuing a degree in a pre-law or law.  The student will perform a range of law clerk tasks while working as a member of the  SBA-OIG Counsel Division.

This position is NTE 1 year, however, it may be extended without further competition based upon the needs of the agency.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation and credit check.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited education institution.
  • Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • Must sign a Pathways Intern Participant Agreement.

You will serve as a Student Trainee (Law Clerk) receiving on-the-job training and experience in the field of Law.  These duties will involve the following activities:

  • Performing legal research and drafting legal memoranda in numerous areas of law which may include:  criminal law and procedure, contracting and fiscal law, administrative law, employment law, the Freedom of Information and Privacy Acts, legislative and regulatory research, and other governmental issues.
  • Verifying citations and legal references on prepared legal documents.
  • Assisting with litigation and civil enforcement matters.
  • Reviewing and preparing exhibits and organizes documents and/or files.

The Office of Personnel Management has identified the following basic education requirements for this position:

GS-04:  Completion of 2 academic years of post-high school study in pre-law or law OR Successful completion of the requirements for an associate's degree in legal studies (please verify by attaching a copy of your college transcripts).

Academic year of undergraduate education (post-high school study):

  • A minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours at an accredited college or university; or
  • A minimum of 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week.
