The Department of Laboratory Medicine is currently seeking 2 Medical Technologist who is ready to assume the role as Technologist in the Hematology service.   The incumbent must possess an above-average knowledge of the principles, theories, and accepted practices of clinical laboratory sciences as they relate to the testing of human blood, body fluid, and solid tissues. The incumbent must have knowledge of medical technology principles, practices, concepts and procedures related to clinical Hematology and histology/immunohistochemistry. The incumbent must also have strong communication skills, and a quality-driven work ethic.  A Bachelor of Science or related degree from an accredited four-year college is highly recommended and possess American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification.

As a Medical Technologist in the Hematology Service your duties will include but not limited to the following:  

 

Assists with the monitoring and evaluation of quality control specimens. 

 

Evaluates peripheral blood smears. 

 

Assists physicians with bone marrow procedures. 

 

Initiates the dehydration process of gross specimen cover slips the sample, and labels and stains the sample for future studies. 

 

Performs complex analysis of blood, urine, and other body fluids and identifies and evaluates abnormalities generated by automated equipment in all sections.

 

Coagulation analysis on automated equipment as well as highly unique and complex assays by mass spectrophotometer and HPLC technologies.   

 

Histology/ immunohistochemical staining.  

 

Analyzes proteins by flow cytometry and performs hemoglobin electrophoresis by HPLC. 

 

Operates, maintains, and troubleshoots instrumentation and evaluates patient results using critical thinking.

Basic Education Requirements for this position :

A degree in medical technology, chemistry, or biology that included or was supplemented by at least: 16 semester hours of biological science of which one course was in microbiology and one course was in immunology; AND 16 semester hours of chemistry of which one course was in organic or biochemistry; AND 3 semester hours of college mathematics.

OR

A full 4-year course of study that included or was supplemented by at least 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post-baccalaureate certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor`s in medical technology.

OR

A combination of (1) at least 35 semester hours of biological science, chemistry, and mathematics as described in paragraph A above and (2) additional appropriate education and/or experience totaling 4 years. This combination of education and experience must have provided knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of medical technology equivalent to that provided by the full 4-year course of study described in A or B above. All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university. Acceptable experience is: responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. Certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) obtained through written examination by a nationally recognized credentialing agency or State licensing body is a good indication that the quality of experience is acceptable. 

Additional qualifications:

To qualify for the GS-09 level:

Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree that is directly related to the duties of this position.

OR

A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

OR

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks under the guidance of a senior medical technologist:   performing the full range of specialized tests and non-routine procedures in one or more areas of a clinical laboratory; troubleshooting the procedures and equipment; and calculating and correlating the results; performing quality control/quality assurance functions in a clinical laboratory such as selecting control samples, testing of instruments and equipment, and maintaining record keeping systems.

To qualify for the GS-11 level:

Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a related field.

OR

A combination of post baccalaureate education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

OR 

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: independently executing unusual and difficult procedures, solving complex problems, and investigating atypical reactions; establishing and performing quality controls/quality assurance in a clinical laboratory; determining quality control measures needed;   selecting control samples; conducting quality control procedures on instruments and equipment; establishing and maintaining record keeping systems; evaluating results, and implementing corrective actions.
