This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR), Division of Mining Research Operations (DMRO), Ground Control Branch (GCB), Spokane, Washington.

The incumbent will be responsible for the integrity of seismological processing of network data, seismic velocity model development, event magnitude calibration, implementation of software tools for analysis, display and distribution of seismic data, failure-mechanism interpretations, and general timely analysis of seismic response to mining activities. Coordinates projects and serves as an advisor to scientists/engineers and offices in program offices both internally and externally in the area of mining ground control. Provides technical assistance; reviews documents; serves on scientific/engineering task forces and committees. Serves as a senior scientist in planning, directing, and coordinating projects intended to increase understanding of causes of mining-related seismic events in order to develop methods to mitigate risk from these hazards. Performs research and laboratory-scale development studies as required. Plans and coordinates methods development and applications projects in support of major agency scientific/engineering programs. Publishes reports of research in peer-reviewed scientific journals, contributes to NIOSH technical documents, presents papers at scientific conferences, and represents the Laboratory or Institute to other Federal agencies, professional societies, state governments and private entities. Performs other duties as assigned.

To qualify, applicants must have successfully completed a full four(4)-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical science, engineering or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

 

OR

 

Have a combination of education and experience in which the education is equivalent to one of the majors shown above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education needed to perform the duties of the position.

 

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

 

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience conducting research in the area of seismic event monitoring and analysis.
