KCVAMC is a tertiary care facility that is affiliated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City and University of Kansas SOM. The incumbent is accountable to section Chief of Neurosurgery in the Surgical Care Department. This position will involve clinical and surgical duties and may provide an opportunity for clinical or basic research. The PA functions also as a coordinator between the attending physicians and the other team members to include nursing, social work and rehabilitative services.  The tour of duty is 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:  

·         U.S. citizenship.  

·         The candidate must meet one of the following:  

(1)     A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or (2)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or (3)  Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.   The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

·         Certification:   As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for employment.   This requirement does not apply to non-certified PAs on VA rolls as of that date.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing and sitting, frequent bending, walking (distance), climbing (steps, ladder, etc, reaching (overhead, extensive/repetitive), repetitive motion and stooping.  The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking.  The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment.  There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.  The use of safe patient handling equipment is required when appropriate to prevent potential injury to both patients and staff.
