To qualify for the GS-05, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below: 1) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must show that you have one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-04). Example: experience directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction or prescribed burning. -OR- 2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. -OR- 3) COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying undergraduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of four years of undergraduate study leading to a Bachelor’s Degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.
To qualify for the GS-06, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below: you must satisfy one of the requirements described below: 1) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must show that you have one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-05). Example: senior crew member fighting wildland fires -OR- 2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One-half year of graduate level education with courses directly related to wildland fire fighting. -OR- 3)COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one-half year of graduate study leading to a Master's Degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.
Graduate Level Education must be directly related to wildland fire fighting duties, such as courses in the following fields: forestry, range management or conservation, wildlife management, natural resources, wildland fire science.
Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. If you do not provide evidence you possess the following selective factor(s), you will be rated not qualified:
1. Must possess a valid state driver's license.
2. Must have prior on-the-line wildland firefighting experience -AND- National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Management Qualifications:
(a) Fire Fighter Type 1(FFT1)
(b) Intermediate Fire Behavior (S-290).
Holding a Commercial Driver's License is preferred, though not required.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Upon receipt of your complete application package, a review of your application will be made to ensure you meet the basic qualification requirements. Your rating will be based on your responses to the Job Specific Questionnaire and the information stated in your resume. If you meet the qualification requirements, your application will be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. In addition, interviews may be conducted for this position. The interviews may be conducted on a pass/fail basis or may be scored. The job specific questions relate to the following knowledge, skills and abilities required to do the work of this position:
1) Knowledge of strategies, tactic, and suppression methods used in containment and control of wildfires and wild land fires;
2) Knowledge of wild land fire management techniques, methods and conditions;
3) Technical firefighting knowledge such as fire engine and pump operations, hose lays, hand crew operations;
4) Skilled in operating a fire engine;
