JOB SUMMARY:

The BLM manages more land - approximately 253 million acres - than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estates throughout the nation. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

BLM is seeking a dynamic and energetic individual to join our team at the Montrose Interagency Fire Management Unit in Montrose, Colorado to serve as an Assistant Engine Supervisor on an engine crew.  This position has been identified as one of the key fire management positions under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard. Provides daily leadership and training for crew members. Instructs crew members in specific tasks and techniques; conducts on-the-job training; distributes and controls work assignments among employees.  Assures timely accomplishments of assigned tasks are complete. The crew performs work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed burning. The primary purpose of this rigorous position is to lead the firefighting crews in performing work directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities.

To qualify for the GS-05, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below:  1) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must show that you have one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-04).  Example: experience directly related to wildland fire suppression and control activities including suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction or prescribed burning.  -OR- 2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. -OR- 3) COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying undergraduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of four years of undergraduate study leading to a Bachelor’s Degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.

To qualify for the GS-06, you must satisfy one of the requirements described below: you must satisfy one of the requirements described below: 1) SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must show that you have one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level (GS-05). Example: senior crew member fighting wildland fires -OR- 2) EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: One-half year of graduate level education with courses directly related to wildland fire fighting. -OR- 3)COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position by combining specialized experience and appropriate graduate education according to the following formula: (a) your total months of full time specialized experience as a percentage of a 12 month total; PLUS (b) your total number of qualifying graduate semester or quarter hours as a percentage of one-half year of graduate study leading to a Master's Degree. The total of the two percentages must equal at least 100 percent.
Graduate Level Education must be directly related to wildland fire fighting duties, such as courses in the following fields: forestry, range management or conservation, wildlife management, natural resources, wildland fire science.

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. If you do not provide evidence you possess the following selective factor(s), you will be rated not qualified:

1. Must possess a valid state driver's license.

2. Must have prior on-the-line wildland firefighting experience -AND- National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Management Qualifications: 

                       (a) Fire Fighter Type 1(FFT1)    

                       (b) Intermediate Fire Behavior (S-290).

Holding a Commercial Driver's License is preferred, though not required.

You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

3) Technical firefighting knowledge such as fire engine and pump operations, hose lays, hand crew operations;

4) Skilled in operating a fire engine;

5) Ability to serve as a working leader, instructing others in specific tasks and techniques controlling work assignments.

This is a seasonal appointment; you will be in a pay status for at least 6 months, but less than 12 months a year. When work or funds are not available you will be placed in non-pay status.

This position requires regular and recurring overtime and shift work.

This is a primary fire position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412(d) (FERS). The date immediately proceeding an individual's 37th birthday is the maximum age at which an applicant can be initially hired into a primary firefighter position. You must provide evidence that you meet MEA eligibility requirements.

THIS IS A DRUG TESTING DESIGNATED POSITION. In accordance with Executive Order 12564, and under the Department's Drug Free Workplace Program.
