This position is located in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Office of Food and Veterinary Medicine (OFVM), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Office of Research, Laurel, Maryland.

Plan, develop, and conduct highly specialized analyses related to the genetic structure and phenotypic characteristics of bacteria and other organisms; Establish bioinformatics analysis pipelines for whole genome sequencing projects with the Office of Research, Center for Veterinary Medicine and provide bioinformatics analysis support for a range of research projects; Initiates and performs studies in collaboration with microbiologists and scientists; Provide bioinformatics expertise in support of next generation sequencing data analyses and assist with microarray design and analyses.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Biological Science, GS-401

A. I have a degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

or

B. I have a combination of education and experience -- Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Basic Qualification Requirements for Microbiologist, GS-403

A. I have a degree in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

B. I have a combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Additional Qualification for Interdisciplinary Scientist, GS-401/403-12

Have one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, to include experience in obtaining, evaluating and analyzing data generated from next generation sequencing platforms; using bioinformatics analysis tools, including specialized publically available and proprietary bioinformatics analysis software and resources (such as NCBI, GenBank, BLAST, PDB, etc.); programming in a computer language (such as C/C++) and in a scripting language (such as Perl or Python); and working in a command-line computing environment ( such as Linux or Unix).


Foreign Education: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
