This vacancy will be used to fill (1) Full-time (40 hours per week), permanent appointment position at the Albany VA Medical Center, Emergency Department.  The tour of duty is 9:00am-7:00pm, rotational schedule, with inclusion of weekends.

NOTE:  Applicant's education and length of practice (experience) will be considered by a Professional Standards Board and Compensation Panel in determining the salary of the applicant selected.  The salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.

 

Grade determination will be based on the incumbent meeting the basic requirements and additional criteria for each grade according the the VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G8, Physician Assistant Qualification Standard.  The grade/rate breakdown is as follows:

GS-08 (Associate Grade) $40,830-$53,078

GS-09 (Full Grade) $47,448-$61,678

GS-11 (Intermediate Grade) $57,408-$74,628

GS-12 (Senior Grade) $68,809-$89,450

The Physician Assistant (PA) in Emergency Medicine is a member of an interdisciplinary team providing medical services to patients in the Emergency Department (ED) Unit.  The PA works under the direction and supervision of a licensed physician with delineated clinical privileges granted by the Medical Staff.  Within the physician/PA relationship, physician assistants exercise autonomy in medical decision making and provide a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services.


The duties of the PA in the ED Unit are, but not limited to:

  • Provides histories, physical examination, orders, notes, and communications to consulting providers
  • Assesses patients, orders, and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests/studies in accordance with VA policy, VA formulary and State regulations.
  • Prescribes appropriate medication orders and outpatient prescriptions
  • Sutures minor wounds, incises and drains cutaneous abscesses, relieves subungual hematomas and splints sprains, strains or minor fractures
  • Formulates and initiates health care teaching for ED patients and their families
  • Works with other staff members of the Department of Emergency Medicine to be part of a team that provides a consistent interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to patient care, education, and communication within the Department of Emergency Medicine.
  • Helps foster a high level of patient and staff satisfaction

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

  • U.S. Citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. 
  • Must meet one of the following:

             (1) A bachelor's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or

            (2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelor's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or

            (3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician.  The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.

  • Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician's Assistants (NCCPA) is required
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
  • Current ACLS and BLS certification required

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The Physician Assistant should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position.  Physical activities include sitting, standing, bending from the lower back, and some light shifting may be involved.  The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.  The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative, secondary to delirium, intoxication, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.
