The incumbent is assigned to work within the Behavioral Health Service.   The incumbent is self directive in performing and documenting a wide range of basic to complex medical and psychiatric clinical skills with minimal supervision from the Registered Nurse.   Incumbent works effectively with patients diagnosed with major psychiatric disorders that are stable and are not experiencing an acute phase of their illness, e.g. depression, schizophrenia, and substance dependence.   Recognizes signs and symptoms of deterioration in condition, e.g. suicidal or psychotic thinking, seizures, and takes appropriate and immediate interventions, and notifies appropriate staff.   Independently completes nursing care procedures, e.g. personal hygiene care, transporting and escorting, checking and recording vital signs, assist in safety rounds, etc.  Acts as a relief Ward Clerk during absences/off-tours.   Independently completes such activities such as timekeeping, processing of physician orders, patient movement (admissions, transfers, discharges), and administrative procedures, travel arrangements, scheduling of appointments, and work orders.   Completes patient teaching both on a one-to-one and within a group, from self-developed materials or materials developed by others.  

Work Schedule: Must be available to work rotating shifts, including weekends, in a unit that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-4) OR successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation OR equivalent combinations of successfully completed related post-high school education (beyond the second year) and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. A transcript or course listing must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.

Specialized Experience: Qualifying specialized experience includes non professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:

  • Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
  • Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
  • Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
  • Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.

Physical Requirements:  Duties may required extensive periods of standing, sitting, and walking.  Working with patients requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stopping, stretching, and similar activities.  In emergent situations the incumbent would be expected to participate in management of disruptive behavior techniques and processes.
