Applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service.
Specialized Experience is experience which is in or directly related to the position to be filled and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of position.
Qualifying experience for the GS-06 level includes experience in the legal or judicial process, drafting and compiling information for the production of legal documents, and reviewing them for correct format and timeliness.
Qualifying experience for the GS-07 level includes experience processing legal documents in support of legal actions. This experience may include initiating and composing standardized legal formats, reviewing legal documents for correct form and timeliness, annotating case files and statues records, compiling status reports and reviewing legal documents for required information and proper format.
Qualifying experience for the GS-08 level includes knowledge of legal terminology, legal documents, and legal processes; and rules and procedures of U.S. District Courts and administrative tribunals in which the office litigates and knowledge of legal reference sources and systems; extracting and summarizing information from legal files and references sources and drafting legal documents.
All grades require providing administrative and clerical support to attorneys in a legal office. Incumbent must be able to manage schedules; answer a multiple line phone system; and apply appropriate legal procedures in writing correspondence and processing cases.

There is no substitution of education for experience for this position.

Category A - Meets the basic qualification requirements for the vacancy and has successful experience in the same or similar job that has demonstrated superior proficiency in applying critical competencies required by this position to work of increased levels of difficulty and complexity.
Category B - Meets the basic qualification requirements for the vacancy and demonstrates satisfactory proficiency in the critical competencies required by this position.
Category C - Meets the specialized experience described in the minimum qualifications requirements section of this announcement and demonstrates proficiency in the basic competencies.

Technical Knowledge – Researches applicable statues, regulations and or case law for precedent ruling or comparable cases as necessary; assist attorneys with compiling and organizing documentary evidence, materials and cases for filing.
Manages and Organizes Information – Maintains and organizes files in proper format, reviews incoming documents for deadlines, performs a variety of legal support tasks for the attorneys.
Information Technology - Uses computers and computer software applications.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills – Clearly, effectively and persuasively conveys information (orally and in writing) to individuals and groups.
Writing – Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling to communicate information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a clear, succinct and organized manner. Composes written information, which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience.
Self-Management - Sets well-defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments.

The examining Human Resources Office (HRO) makes the final determination concerning applicant ratings.
