The Birmingham Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC) is an integral part of the Medical community that provides acute, tertiary, medical, and surgical care to Veterans of Alabama.   The Medical Center provides care to a veteran population of 420,000 in Alabama and treats approximately 57,000 unique veterans annually.   The medical center serves as a referral center for this area with 138 operating beds with care provided in almost all medical and surgical specialties and subspecialties.

Birmingham, AL is located in the heart of the Southeastern United States and is a progressive center for medical research, banking, music, technology, art, engineering, and higher education.

This position in located in the Neurology Service in Birmingham VA Medical Center. The epileptologist is a specialty care physician who is Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neurology and has fellowship training in all aspects of epilepsy management, including pre and post epilepsy surgery evaluations. Experience in magnetoencephalography as a tool for epilepsy surgery evaluation is highly preferred. The Neurologist will be a member of the Neurology Service and oversee the development and daily operations of the Birmingham VA Medical Center's video EEG monitoring unit and continuous long term monitoring in the ICUs.    He/She will provide acute care management and follow-up for epilepsy patients.   The epileptologist is responsible for assisting the team in the development of an organized approach to epilepsy and epilepsy evaluation, facilitating emergency treatment, performing thorough evaluations, and in the implementation of evidence-based medicine and best practices, thereby resulting in improved patient outcome at decreased cost.   The epileptologist will help supervise neurology residents and fellows rotating through the VA (inpatient and outpatient) in the management of epilepsy. He/she will be encouraged to participate in clinical epilepsy research and education as part of the VA mission.

Qualification:  

US Citizenship:  U.S. Citizenship (Non-citizens may be appointed only if it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens)

Education:  Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.

Licensure:  Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Certification:  Must be board certified or eligible in Neurology.

Preferred Experience/Qualification:  

1.  Background in ongoing inpatient/outpatient experience within the last 2 years is highly preferred.

2.  Board certified or eligible in Neurology.

3.  Must qualify for academic appointment at the university affiliate.

4.  Research experience and publications required.

5.  Fellowship training in Epilepsy management including EEG interpretation and intra operative monitoring for carotid endarterectomy surgery greater than 1 year.

6.  Fellowship training in interpretation and use of magnetoencephalography (MEG) in pre-surgical evaluations is preferred.

7.  Fellowship training in continuous long term EEG monitoring in ICUs (medical/surgical) and epilepsy monitoring units.

8.  Fellowship training in phase I/II evaluation of patients with epilepsy.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:   Satisfactory physical examination as determined by the Employee Health Unit upon appointment only.  See VA Directive and Handbook 5019 ( http://vaww1.va.gov/ohrm/HRLibrary/Dir-Policy.htm ).  Functional requirements include light lifting under 15 lbs, light carrying 15-44 lbs, walking and standing and standing for up to 8 hours, use of rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, ability to read type written characters (glasses permitted), ability to hear the whispered voice (hearing aid permitted), repeated bending for up to 8 hours, etc.
