Under the supervision of the Administrative Officer for the Chief of Staff Office, the Registered Nurse(RN)  will respond to nursing staff or family concerns, transfers out of ICU within 24 hours, codes and identified deteriorating patients on inpatient acute care during the assigned tour of duty.  Clinical duties include providing episodic care to patients who meet criteria for interventions via rapid response team (RRT).  The RN selected will assume a leadership role for the rapid response call and will remain in charge until the crises is resolved or until the attending physician , resident physician, Hospitalist, or medical officer of the day (MOD) arrives.  In addition, assists staff nurses to assess the patient, reviews the chart and makes recommendations  while mentoring and coaching the staff nurse, runs vital sign reports and acts accordingly and reviews patient transfers from critical care areas within 24 hours and intervenes as necessary as to avoid readmissions to critical care.   Contacts the physician as needed and administers emergency medication and manages emergency equipment as indicated.  Uses data analysis skills in tracking, trending and analyzing data to identify trends and aberrations.  Demonstrates leadership by involving others in improving patient care.  Initiates/participates in quality improvement activities that result in improved outcomes for patients.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). 


Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.   


Must be proficient in spoken and written English.

Current certification in ACLS


Applicant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.   


Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows: Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization, Professional Development: performance, education/career development, Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality, Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.
