The Clinical Neuropsychologist serves in the Behavioral Health Service as an independent practitioner (healthcare provider) of clinical neuropsychology and psychology with specialized knowledge in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and/or rehabilitation of patients across the lifespan with neurological, medical, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric conditions, as well as other cognitive and learning disorders.The clinical neuropsychologist uses psychological, neurological, cognitive, behavioral, and physiological principles, techniques and tests to evaluate patients' neurocognitive, behavioral, and emotional strengths and weaknesses and their relationship to normal and abnormal central nervous system functioning.

Licensed psychologists obtain clinical privileges to practice general psychological procedures expected of all psychologists.  They may also be granted specialty area clinical privileges to include (but not be limited to) Rehabilitation Psychology, Clinical Neuropsychology, Clinical Geropsychology, and/or Clinical Health Psychology.  Unlicensed psychologists practice under the supervision of a licensed psychologist with clinical privileges, covered by a Scope of Practice document.

 

Work Schedule: 8am - 4:30pm on Monday-Friday.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

·         U.S. citizenship

·         English language proficiency (written and spoken)

·         Physical standards - All applicants must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to employment may be required.

·         Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA).  The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed.

·         Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that has been accredited by APA.

·         Hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States (e.g., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia.  Exception:  The Secretary may waive the requirement of licensure for an individual psychologist for a period not to exceed 2 years from the date of employment on the condition that such a psychologist provide care only under the supervision of a psychologist who is so licensed.  Non-licensed psychologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate psychologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 (a) (1) (D).  Failure to obtain licensure during that period is justification for termination of the temporary appointment.  This may result in termination of employment.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
