Position Location: CSMS-North, Atlanta, Georgia. 

Permanent Change of Station (PCS): PCS is not authorized.

Selected Reserve Incentive Program (SRIP): Acceptance of a Federal Excepted technician position of over 179 days in length will cause termination from the Selected Reserve Incentive Program (SRIP).

Type of Appointment: This is a full-time, Excepted Indefinite, dual-status position which requires Georgia Army National Guard Membership. Position is indefinite; however may convert to permanent without further competition.  If a tenured applicant is selected, tenure will not change.

Job Summary:This position is located in the Joint Forces Headquarters—State, Logistics Directorate (J-4), Surface Maintenance Facility.  The purpose of this position is perform maintenance, repair, and inspections on small arms and related devices.  The primary purposes are to provide maintenance repair and accurization of national match weapons.

Background Check:  Selectee may, at the option of the agency, be required to submit to criminal, credit history, and general background checks which will be evaluated by the agency prior to a final offer of employment and access into the Georgia National Guard Federal Technician or Active Guard/Reserve program.

National Guard Membership: This position requires military membership. It is designated for Georgia Army National Guard Enlisted incumbent(s) only. In accordance with ARNG regulations, incumbent performs duties necessary to accomplish military Small Arms Repairer functions in support of programs essential to state Army National Guard daily operations, training and readiness missions.

As a member of a Georgia Army National Guard unit, you will be required to train with your unit, normally one weekend a month and 15 days of annual training each year. Georgia Army National Guard units and members are subject to immediate call to federal or state active duty to meet national or state emergencies.

  • Under 5 USC 2108 & 5 CFR 211, Veteran's Preference criteria does not apply.

The following list of duties is not conclusive but provides a brief snapshot of the duties that may be required of this position:

  • Performs accurization of national match weapons (pistols, rifles, and light machine guns) on a limited basis.
  • Disassembles weapons, assemblies, subassemblies and other components.  Examines for defects, misalignment and malfunctions.
  • Replaces barrels, firing pins, springs, trigger mechanisms, shell ejectors, and other parts and assemblies. 
  • Performs overhaul, maintenance, and repair on a variety of small arms. 
  • Diagnoses and identifies mechanical deficiencies and/or malfunctions in weapons including: automatic pistols, revolvers, shotguns, automatic rifles, grenade launchers, machine guns, and rocket launchers, and other small arms and accessories.
  • Uses micrometer to measure altered tolerances and makes additional adjustments as required. 
  • Is responsible for accountability, storage and security of arms and other sensitive items while they are kept for repair, usually in vaults with limited access.
  • Serves as a commodity inspector during Command Maintenance Management evaluations (COMET) or as a member of a Maintenance Assistance Instruction Team (MAIT).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General Experience:  Must have experience or training which demonstrates a working knowledge to read and interpret instructions, repair manual, specifications and drawings; must have a knowledge of shop mathematics sufficient to use testing devices and measuring instruments; and be proficient in the use and maintenance of hand tools and equipment.

Specialized Experience:  Must have a minimum of 12 months specialized experience with substantial mechanical skill is required to effectively and efficiently repair, overhaul, and rebuild small arms for both conventional uses and for weapons involving accurization.  Experience to inspect, diagnose malfunctioning, wear and/or damage is required.  The ability to perform accurization procedures on weapons to improve their performance is required.  Basic knowledge of other trades in order to modify and/or manufacture weapons parts for accurization is required. Experience to apply technical manuals, regulations, specifications and drawings to determine operation, assembly and tolerances of the variety of weapons worked on is required for successful performance.  Experience using and maintaining a variety of hand and power tools and gages is required.  Tools include drills, files, precision gages and measuring instruments, magnafluxing equipment and/or borescopes to determine when parts are worn or damaged beyond acceptable tolerances.  
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):  Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements will be further evaluated by the Selecting Official based on the following KSAs considered essential to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position.

  • Substantial mechanical skill is required to effectively and efficiently repair, overhaul, and rebuild small arms for both conventional uses and for weapons involving accurization. 
  • Knowledge and skill to inspect, diagnose malfunctioning, wear and/or damage is required. 
  • Ability to perform accurization procedures on weapons to improve their performance is required.

Other Requirements: Candidates must have a valid state driver’s license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.
Candidates must possess a security clearance (Secret or Top Secret) or be able to obtain a clearance within one year of appointment.

National Guard Compatibility: Once an applicant is selected and prior to being placed in the Small Arms Repairer position, the selectee must be assigned to a compatible position in the Georgia Army National Guard as a Enlisted member in ECMF: 91; EMOS: 92Y/Z. Rank inversion is strictly prohibited.

Wear of the Army uniform as prescribed by AR/NGB/GA NGR is required for incumbent of this position.  Acceptance of this position constitutes concurrence with this requirement as a condition of employment.

Preplacement Medical Requirements: Selectee will be required to undergo medical testing, at the government's expense, prior to beginning employment.  Medical tests are used to determine fitness and eligibility for employment.

Optional Form 78 (Certificate of Medical Examination) will be used to determine the fitness and eligibility for employment.  Upon review of results, the Human Resources Officer will approve selection, require additional medical information or find selectee medically disqualified for employment and withdraw said offer.
