Position(s) will be filled under the Department of the Army Pathways Internship Program. The Department of the Army Pathways Internship Program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with opportunities to work in the Department of Army and explore Federal careers while still in school and while getting paid for the work performed.  

 

Although not guaranteed, internship appointments made under this announcement may be extended.  Due to the temporary need of this position, appointment may be terminated early.

Who May Apply: Department of the Army Internship Program Eligibles who are:

  • Current students who are enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, as a student in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate on a full or half time basis. Students must be in good academic standing and be a student for the duration of this Pathways Intern appointment.

You will provide visitor assistance, furnishing information to visitors, such as facts about the Flora, Fauna, geological and historical features, information regarding roads, trails, accommodations, programs, and present informal talks to groups of visitors,  explain rules and regulations, receive and report oral complaints regarding service facilities. You will provide needed assistance in emergencies (first-aid, search and rescue, etc.).  You will inspect the area and facilities to detect, prevent, when possible, and/or report unauthorized entry and use, vandalism, theft, uncontrolled fires, hazards to public safety; inspect public recreation areas and facilities to detect and report needed repairs or maintenance. You will assist in boundary surveys, searching land records; compile and summarize statistical data, prepare maps and reports. You will operate and perform minor maintenance of equipment, such as short-wave radio, chainsaws, fire pumps, generators. You will perform minor maintenance and repair of roads, trails, shelters, signs, sanitary facilities, bridges, boats, camps, and picnic areas. You will gather and record data for permit applications, explain permit program to individuals, inspect land adjacent to privately owned lots insuring that activity on Government-owned land has necessary permits and report violations to supervisor. You will participate in Fish and Wildlife population and condition surveys by collecting, summarizing, and tabulating statistics. You will read traffic counters and conduct on-site visitor interview surveys to collect and record visitation data and check mechanical traffic counter equipment for malfunctions or needed repairs.  You will patrol the park to insure rules and regulations are complied with, prepare and attach "Notice of Violation" to parked unattended vehicles, and report noncompliance cases and other difficulties encountered to supervisor.

To qualify for the GS-04 level, applicants must possess the following experience, education, or combination of experience and education. The experience must be equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-03 or equivalent):

 

A. Have at least six months general experience in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work that provided a familiarity with natural or cultural history; fish or wildlife habitat characteristics; techniques of resource protection and use; recreational use of public lands and facilities; enforcement of laws, rules, or regulations; fire prevention techniques and fire suppression methods; or the practice of interpersonal relations skills in dealing with the general public; AND have a minimum of six months of specialized experience in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement or other park-related work;  OR


B. Have at least two years of education above high school with 12 semester hours of related course work such as - natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS OR YOU WILL BE RATED INELIGIBLE; OR


C. Have some of the experience as described in A, but less than one year; and have more than one year but less than two years above the high school level as described in B. The  combined/computed the percentage of the requirements that you meet must total at least 100%. (To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education above high school beyond one year by 30. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify) NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF YOUR COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS OR YOU WILL BE RATED INELIGIBLE.
