As a Veterinary Medical Officer in the Office of Research, Division of Applied Veterinary Research, Center for Veterinary Medicine, you will perform research and conduct studies with a variety of domestic animals and poultry.  The studies involve both healthy and diseased animals, a wide range of pharmacological and chemical preparations and application of various sciences and techniques.  Areas of research include, but are not limited to, toxicity and metabolism studies on animals with drugs and/or contaminated feeds of several types; evaluating interactions between drugs and environmental chemicals; evaluating the metabolism, absorption, distribution and elimination of drugs from tissues and organs; and verifying milk residue patterns from intramammary or other routes of drug administration.

DUTIES:

  • Develops and leads an individual research program.
  • Plans and conducts large animal research in food producing animals including protocol development and analysis of results.
  • Assists in the administration of drug products, collecting samples, and conducting physical examinations in large animals.
  • Develops various analytic methods(for example: mass spectrometry and gas chromatography).
  • Interacts with scientists in a regulatory environment.

A. A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA). (Graduates of foreign veterinary medical schools not accredited by the AVMA Council on Education must refer to https://www.avma.org/Pages/home.aspx for requirements).

 

In addition to meeting the education requirements above, applicants must meet one of the following:

 

1) One year of progressively responsible professional veterinary experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service that includes planning and conducting research in food producing animals. (experience must be reflected in your resume)

OR

2) Master’s degree in an area of specialization, including but not limited to, animal science, avian medicine, food safety, infectious diseases, veterinary clinical sciences, pathobiology, biomedical sciences, veterinary anatomy, veterinary preventive medicine, comparative biological sciences, epidemiology, veterinary parasitology, molecular veterinary biosciences, public health, microbiology, pathology, immunology, laboratory animal medicine, toxicology, wildlife, zoological animal medicine, or sciences related to the work of a veterinary medical officer position. (must submit transcripts of this dual degree to support this option)

OR

3) Successful completion of two years of an internship, residency program, or fellowship training program in a discipline related to the position. (must submit documentation to support this option)

Conditions of Employment:

 

1. Time-in-Grade: Career or career-conditional current and former Federal employees who select to apply under merit promotion procedures must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade level of this position.
